While doing some research on B-29 strikes against Japan in 1944/45 for adding them to RSRD(with the generic long range bomber substituting for the 29, as it looks somewhat like a B-29, if anyone has a 29 model that will work with RSRD TMO, let me know) so can perform lifeguard duties.I have am finished for now and have all the raids I could find from June 1944 and including the atomic bombs missions on Hiroshima and Nagasaki(wish there was a way to make a nuke or a pseudo one.Perhaps could really up the hit points on the plans ordanance? lol) Anyway, looking forward to trying it out and may end up releasing it for those who want this if can figure out how to make a mod of it.

Doing this research has made me wonder if there has ever been a good B-29 sim? I think it would be pretty fun flight sim, long range missions, planes ramming, AA fire, fighters, long flights back, mostly night missions, flying at low altitudes, flying the Little Boy or Fat Man missions.

IL-2 Sturmovik would be your best bet.

I'd love a B-29 in this game,I play FOTRS it would beat the Lancasters, and have it as a long range bomber flying out of Guam and later in war from Okinawa. I ask this earlier on and got slaged off abot it,apperently when i posted it previously some people wanted SSBNS off the coast of Japan ather than relistic bombers.

IL-2 has B-29's? I've heard good things, I need to check into it.

Hmm, guess I will have to get IL- 1946(right) and I assume learn about all the mods.

B-29s are now flyable in IL2-1946 as well as the other heavies. This flight sim is good as stock but with the mods it has become incredible. The Full Mission Builder lets you build just about any scenario you want. The DBW mod version has over 200 maps covering the major theatres as well as over 2000 objects to place on your map.

Check on YouTube, there are many, many videos featuring IL2.

How is the AI in IL2 now? Used to be dumber than a box of rocks before. Has it been improved at all? Also, is there any kind of campaign generator for it now?

By all means, post where those mods can be obtained. As far as I knew, there were only some wackos who managed to allow you to fly it (and other non-flyable planes) in a third-person perspective. I know not of detalied cockpits for the usually non-flyable ones.

You've apparently been gone from that scene a long time Daniel Prates. There's a very active modding community for il-2 1946 now. Has been for years.

I've been away for a long time also lol, I used to play CFS II, in fact it's the first real flight sim I ever got into, never enjoyed flying airliners but WW II PTO, with what was an awesome game for it's day, loved it, played it liked crazy, then got busy with other things.I stumbled into SH 4 , I was laid up one summer recovering from a bad auto accident, my ex girlfriend saw it at best buy, knowing I enjoy WW II related things, she purchased it as a gift, it's the only reason I will not speak ill of her LOL. I will give IL-2 a try soon.Any suggestions for a quality joystick? My old sidewinder apparently does not work with Windows 7 lol, it was a great one back in the CFS 2 days though.

I've been using the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro for years. Cheap and reliable, it has withstood a lot of abuse, and it still works with Win 7.

Pick up IL2 1946. It contains all previous IL2 games in one. I believe the latest version is 4.10. Go here: http://search.yahoo.com/r/_ylt=A0oG7m4SVb1PrRQAu2hXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTByMTNuNTZ zBHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDMgRjb2xvA2FjMgR2dGlkAw--/SIG=11p2b57u2/EXP=1337836946/**http%3a//www.sas1946.com/main/index.php You will find loads of info and mods here. I'm still running the older 4.09 version, and a modpack called Ultra Pack or UP for short. It's sort of like a RFB or TMO for IL2. Do some research because you'll need to do some preparations to make IL2 Windows 7 friendly (nothing complicated). As for a joystick, I'm still useing my MS Sidewinder with no issues whatsoever with Windows 7.

Join the forums at the above site. You'll get all the help you need;) You could also visit the "Helo, Flight Sim " forums on this site as well. I visit every once in a while to see what's up.

Here it is a proper moment to mention a line from 'the producers': "you keep repeating that, but you don't say how".

Show us some links. :salute:

A classy dude, you are.

Obviously, I (and other forum members) were expecting that you would be kind enough to provide some links of your choice, some proven or un-bugged links, some comunity you already know and vouch for... instead, you posted a link to a google search on "il-2 mods". Nice.

I hope your own doubts and questions are answered by the community with the same politeness you are dispensing others.

Have a nice week, friend!

Thanks, I survived the ubi flame wars over the mod scene. Too bad you missed that. The ubi zoo is pretty dead now though. Long story short, they redesigned their board and everyone hated it.

Edit: Above was typed when you only had the first line.

Hey man, didn't mean to piss you off there, but wouldn't that kinda question better be posted on an il-2 board? There's a lot of good options and your questions have already been discussed in great depth over there.

A lame argument, when this thread has already gone so far on the subject by now.

But ok, nevermind. I'll go try it by myself. Thanks for the help - or for the lack of it, whatever.

I fly several times a week with my squad in IL2. There are a ton of mods. Currently there is UP 3.0 (UltraPack) and another one gaining attention is HSFX (History mod) that combine 100's of other mods and make them work nicely together. They have added about 150 more flyable planes and new maps over the years. My squad has been using UP all along, but they have been dropping the ball lately. They released UP 3.0 Release Candidate 4 about a year ago based on IL2 version 4.10.1, and have not released a final. Now and then some members of the squad have problems, and strange things do happen for most of us once in a while, but usually they are just certain missions having some issue.

One of my favorites is the Korea Map, and flying Sabres and Migs. Sidwinders and Nukes. Bombing Seoul with B-29s!

We are probably going to move over to HSFX 6.0 when it comes out. IL2 released stock version 4.11.1 about 5 months ago, and HSFX 6.0 will work with IL2 4.11.1.

IL2 4.11 has greatly improved the AI. They are killers now! No more flying in a straight line, or loopy loops. They now cannot see through clouds, or through their fuselage, and stuff like that. So, you can dart into a cloud to loose them just like they did to you the past 7 years.

UP 3.0 RC4 Install:
Install IL2 and patch up to 4.10.1
Copy the folder so you have a stock backup.
Download UP 3.0 (http://ultrapack.il2war.com/index.php?action=articles;sa=view;article=4), Install over IL2 4.10.1
Download UP 3.0 RC4 (http://ultrapack.il2war.com/index.php?action=articles;sa=view;article=3) (This includes RC 2 & 3), Install over UP 3.0
That's it.

As some have said, the only real option is IL-2 1946 Ultrapack 3 mod

IL-2 1946 is really like the flight sim equivalent of this game.

It was a good game, but it is PHENOMENAL with the mega mod packs.

What started out as a game with 32 flyable planes, now is the premier WWII flight sim with close to 500 flyable planes.

The B-29 is is one

Flying that bad boy at 30,000 feet and programing the norden bombsight effectively is a lot like SHIV manual targeting.

Il-2 1946, with its official patches and mods, is the BEST aerial combat simulator until now, every day it gets more developed, look this:

In Il-2 there always have been the He-111 H6, torpedo bomber, you just attacked like any other torp bomber. Head straight for the ship, release the fish, and pray it will hit the target.

But now with the new official patch they added to the bomber station an aerial torpedo gyro device (Torpedo-Kommandogerät) . It's great!!. You have to watch with binoculars (dead ahead) at the ship in your little observation place. and then set the ship s AoB and speed, and the degres of spread if you are firing salvo. Its not like an U-boat s TDC, but makes aerial torpedo attacks more precise, and its very realistic, i didnt knew that TDC for planes even existed in WWII

Here s a video featuring ToKG, with a Junkers Ju-88 [/URL]

There is another mod pack called HSFX (History Special Effects mod). They have just released their new version that works with IL2's latest version v4.11.1. UP3 only works with IL2 v4.10.1. The AI is greatly improved in 4.11.1.

Also, UP3 has been a BETA for about 1.5 years!! They have been working on UP 4 for a while. UP 3 will never be a final, and has some annoying, but workable bugs.

My squad is currently testing HSFX6 and deciding if they want to swtich to it. The HSFX guys are tightly associated with the IL2 dev team, where the UP3 guys are not, and have problems with them. So, my guess is that we will switch to HSFX. I would rather use a mod pack that is in tight with the game's devs and also can put out a released final of it's mods. :know:

If you can get through the flak and enemy players, and if you can estimate the speed and course of the enemy ships fairly well, AND if you can successfully get the torp into the water without breaking, you can unleash some devastating torpedo barrages.

Of course the Mark 13 aerial torpedo was at least as temperamental as its non airborne cousins. The early ones had to be dropped at almost exactly 130 mph and not much higher or lower than 100 feet.

It's rather tricky to remain stable at that slow speed, and even the slightest mistake at that altitude means you crash. Also, you're a sitting duck for flak and enemies flying that slow.

Our squadron has practiced, and gotten quite good at swooping in at close to 300 mph, banking hard to the target run, chopping throttle, dropping gear and flaps and opening the bomb bay to bleed off speed fast, while laying the fish gently into the water when we reach the proper range and drop criteria, then raising everything and kicking it into full throttle for the escape run.

It's very challenging and exciting for us.

In the later war, it gets easier as the MK 13 ringtail allows for drops around 400 to 500 feet and 200 mph.
