View Full Version : Champions League Final! Place yer bets!
Yes folks! It's that time again! The European Champions League Final, the Mighty Bayern Munich versus Chelsea. We all expected a Real v Barca final but it didn't happen, Barca's tippy tappy technical style being bested by the plucky English side and real coming off worse once again to the German boys who have often seemed like their bogey team in European competition.
So, who's going to win? My mate's boyfriend has a nice accumulator going on Munich. If they win, he gets 80 quid. If they win and Ribery scores the first goal, he gets a tasty 700! (He's got form on this too, his last football Accumulator netted him three and a half grand.) I'm backing Munich, I think (being a Spurs fan I just can't face supporting Chelsea.) Munich are playing at home tonight - I think this is the first time in the history of the modern competition a finalist is playing in their own stadium - so advantage to them on that front.
But here's the thing: For a lot of Chelsea players this might well be their last chance to win the biggest trophy in club football, and added to the fact that their stand in coach has done pretty well since Villas Boas got dumped.
So, the sun is shining for what feels like the first time this spring, they're getting ready to play that theme music - place your bets! Who is the winner going to be?
I love football, me. :yeah:

Hate Chelsea. Go Munich.
Yamamoto...
No...wait...
Well, I only liked Chelski when the Special One was in charge, so whoever wins I'm not so fussed.

There is an awful lot about living in Glasgow I dislike, but the patter is ace. :)
Pen! Saved! OOF! 1-1 still.
Get in there Munich! Set aboot them.
Mind you, once my team goes out of business for good in about a months time I'll have to transfer my loyalty to Spurs full time. I'd better start getting my Cockney up to speed.

No no no. The Famous Glasgow Rangers. Until the money runs out at the end of the month...:nope:
Congratulations to Chelsea. Deserved it in the end.
Ah, good old Rangers, crying shame what has happened.
Chelski got it in the end, they were not the better performers, but fortune favoured them.

Munich, especially in the first half, was not just better, but totally superior. At least dominant in second. But in the end, how man corners you had, how nice your tactics were and how beautiful your moves, how many 1-on-1s you've won and how you rolled over the other team at will, does not mean anything if you do not translate your superiority into goals scored.
Do not want to sound unfair or non-sporting, but I must say the win for Chelsea is extremely lucky, to put it mildly. Their performance was absolutely disappointing. I expected a better show.

:haha: Chelsea lucky? that sounds like losers sour grapes to me.
Where was the penalty when Torres was fouled a yard inside the Bayern box?
I think the luck swings both ways.
Chelsea played defensively and played extremely well. Bayern had 18-19 corners before 1 was converted, and on another day Cech would have stopped the weakish header. Chelsea had 2 corners? I think before Drogbas world class goal. Even on the slow motion replays it was practically too quick to see.
The blues were also without 2 main defenders and likely their best young striker/winger, but every time Robben or Ribbery went round a defender there was another in the way. Every shot was either blocked or put under extreme pressure by the young defense, and the stats showed that 8-9 out of 10 of Bayerns shots were off target as a result.
Bayern played well, and it was a great match to watch. Unfortunately, Schweinsteiger when he stepped up, you could see the pressure was too much, and when he hesitated in his run up, everyone knew he would fail. Pity, because he is a fantastic player. Hope he doesn't let it get him down.

Gomez failed to make is chances count that and Robbens bad penalty were what cost Bayern the game. Bayern were the dominant side most of the match and caused problems to Chelseas defenders.
That said, both sides played a good game and in the penalty shootout Chelsea had more luck and that is that. They deserve their first Champions league title and Bayern will add their fifth on another date.

Well to be true Bavaria was indeed better and had much more chances - how not, Chelsea did not really play but just blocked all the time, and then won lol.
Hey, they learned from us, this was the revenge for 20 years of "standing football" as Germany "played" it back then in the 80ies :O:
I'm inclined to agree with Sky from what I heard listening to it on Five live, Chelsea played a fairly non-aggressive game, and then Schweinsteiger made his fatal error and the dice fell in Chelskis favour. Drogba and Cech played well though, can't deny that.

Better ManU than Barca or Real or Milan, hell I'd even take CSKA Moscow over those three.

The German TV commentator brought it to the point when saying somewhere in the early stage of the second half: "Was Chelsea heute hier geboten hat, grenzt an Arbeitsverweigerung." - "What Chelsea has shown today, borders refusal to work."
Note: I do not say they played destructively, which they have been often accused of this season, I read.
Sammi,
that was no foul , that was a dive. Sometimes people drop just too easily. I counted two dives on both sides inside the penalty box, and the referee refused to get hooked by any - good decision. He also refused to whistle two hand-plays that were unintentional, one by each team. The referee all in all did a good job, he was missing one or two yellows against Chelsea in the first half that I would have given, but that were no game-deciding scenes, so: Schwamm drüber.

Cech was very close to holding I think all penalties. I now understand why you rate him as a penalty killer.

No, it was a clear foul, yes Torres went down easy, as would every single player of today bar 1 or 2, Mata being one so nimble he managed to avoid almost all of the lunging 2 footed tackles that came his way, and there were many. The ref couldn't see it as he was still back in the Chelsea half, and the linesman couldn't see it because the defender was between him and Torres.
The replay however showed a challenge that hit Torres' right leg, not the ball - foul. A yard inside the box, should have been a penalty. Lady luck was with Bayern at that moment.
I agree though that the officials did a good job in general, kept the game flowing and didn't spoil anything.
Regards, Sam.

Yeah, but at the end of the day you have to score the goals to win the game, and Munich didn't do that. It isn't about how pretty your technical skills are, or even how much possession you have.
If you've got the ball, and you're in the box and don't know what to do, put it in the back of the net, son, and we'll talk about it later.
Who was that, Brian Clough? Can't remember. He's right though. Munich lost last night because their finishing was awful, and that's what the game boils down to. Still, in this era of tippy tappy twinkle-toed nonsense I rather like a decent showing of Cattenaccio. OK, Chelsea aren't exactly the AC Milan team of old when comes to shutting out others, and they rode their luck last night but it's their name on the trophy. I like Munich as well. Always next year, especially now the Barca bubble has burst, although I suspect it might be Madrid that benefits the most.
Just one thing, does this mean that Spurs lose their CL place to make room for Chelsea now? I hope not. 'Arry's boys deserve another shot at the Big Cup.
Alright lads, see you all again on the 8th of June for the Euros? :yeah:

Came across a strange phenomena (to me anyway....a bet that won whatever the result was)) on Friday night....went into Ladbrokes to put on my Irish Lottery bet and asked the staff member behind the counter what the odds were for the two finalists.....
Munich 4/5....Chelsea 7/2
A quick bit of maths told me....put £20 on Munich and £10 on Chelsea...total outlay £30.
Munich win and your return is £36, Chelsea win and your return is £45
£6 or £15 profit...depending on the winning team.

Well to be totally honest/frank I didn't place a bet because of the low vaue of the winnings.
Now £2000 on one and £1000 on the other would have been a lot more interesting...had I of been a gambler :DL
