A lot of marijuana smuggling goes on across the US/Canada border, from what I understand.

I am not familiar with the west coast, but out east, the two main weak points are the Ontario-New York borders and the various Indian reserves which dot the frontier.

Ontario and New York are separated by the St-Lawrence river. At night, the USCG will often spot fast boats crossing the river, but usually cant react before they are across.

The other major problem are Indian reserves which straddle the border. Movement from Canada or the US onto the reserves is unrestricted. Canadian authorities are unwilling or unable to act on the reserves. In theory, the canada-US border on the reserve is supposed to be policed by the local band, but it is well known to be relatively "porous".

I'm reminded of the embargo President Jefferson tried to place on British imports in response to the Chesapeake Incident of 1807. The result was a massive increase in smuggled British goods through Canada. The only ones who suffered were the American merchants who obeyed the embargo and the US government.
