The mid morning accident between the amphibious assault vessel USS. Essex and the oiler USNS Yukon occurred about 120 miles off the coast of California as the Essex was approaching the Yukon to be refueled, said a spokesman for the 3rd Fleet.

Some sorry skipper's certainly gonna get the axe. :salute:Its unfortunate that even if investigation concludes that accident was not captain's fault or that his/her actions as captain didn't contribute to accident, this will still hurt his/her career.

Yes, it is unfortunate, but from the Navy's point of view, the Captain still has ultimately responsibility for the ship, that means taking responsibility for mistakes, even if they weren't your direct fault. In their eyes, if a Captain can't keep the ship on course, how reliable are they?

Might have an adverse effect on upward career mobility.

Well if the boat does anything good, the Captain gets the credit so it is only fair that if the boat screws the pooch, the Captain gets the blame.
