What will it take to make a new Battlestations game?

-Game engine
-A Good Team of people
-Money

What we have

-Game engine [o]
-A Good team of people [[x]]
-Money [[x]]

x = what we have
o = what we dont have.

My question is will you want to do such a game? the Eidos hungary has abandonned the project A good one and modding communities are our only hope.

Engine shouldn't be an issue, there's a number you can download and start working with. Probably have to purchase a license if you plan on releasing a commercial product, or there might be a royalty system in place. Unity (http://unity3d.com/unity/) seems pretty versatile.

What you really need is a market though. Not that many folk interested in buying it.

Mixing Silent hunter 5 graphics with Battlestations gameplay would be pretty awesome.

I think I found a good engine. The question is Are people interested in making it?

If yes I can do the forums. I think we can sell it because the company that makes these games closed.

I'll almost certainly wager that even if the developers and publishers folded that the rights would've been snapped up by another company for a nominal fee, a legal paper-chase ensues. Use an engine, design your game, but call it something else and don't copy too closely is my advice. :yep:

I will see what I can call it but I cant do it and you guys can. if we get enough people on it we might have a chance. there are other people from other sites willing to help.

I know a lot about ships/submarines/planes and i can help alot i read a lot of documentaries about this subject! I can also give ideas. i have plenty of them and i can work on the forum. That's all i can do.

Indeed. Besides that, aparently the Battlestations concept didn't do that well. Personally I still regret paying 5 euros for Midway. Prolly a good idea to come up with a better one.

The devs didnt do such a good job with that game but now that we are making it we can do it as we like and make it either for sale or a free 2 play ofcourse with a different name.

Same thing that always happens. :haha:

Right, erm, my point previously was that if you want to bring people together to work on a project you need to have a concept, preferably a well detailed one. Stating "Mixing Silent hunter 5 graphics with Battlestations gameplay would be pretty awesome" is extremely vague: basically everyone has a different interpretation of what that means. If people are to work together, they need to be on the same page, which means there need to be clearly stated goals; what is the game about? What are its major features? What mechanics will be in place? Target audience? Where will the balance between abstraction and realism lie? Distribution model? It goes on.

Also... doing something just because it would be awesome is not proper motivation. It works if you want to get a group together for an afternoon of shooting eachother with little paint capsules, but for a long term investment of time and/or money like game development people require more. Which leads back to the first point: a well detailed concept provides something someone can put some faith in, some level of reasurance the project will come to fruition and sell to/be accepted by an audience.

tl;dr noone knows what to expect at this point so noone is interested.

Furthermore Eidos Hungary is a subdivision of Square-Enix, who certainly have not shut down, and thus are still the copyright owners of the Battlestations franchise.

Taking the name out of the picture for the moment, do you know how much it cost to develop Battlestations:Midway or Pacific? I do not, I must confess, however the average cost of game developing stands at, I believe, around twenty million dollars. Obviously for Midway or Pacific it was probably lower, most likely between one and five million, and with a company like Eidos/Enix behind it, then the publishing was sorted too.

So, what about Indie? Well, you're not going to get the graphics of Midway or Pacific in a game without putting in some serious man-hours which will require serious cash. How about raising funds? Through a kick-starter project perhaps? Do you think that there would be enough people to put that kind of money towards the project? I have no doubts that quite a few people on here would put money towards it, but they'd want to see something solid for that money, not just a vague hope.
Take, for example, Deamons Imperial U-Flotilla, or Mike 'Red October' Henses sub simulator, both have been in development for a long time, and progress has been steady. For a lot of people they're not even on the radar because most people have a short attention span and if something doesn't get released within a certain time frame then it disappears until it suddenly pops back up in beta.
Both of these men have been working on their project not as a job but as a labour of love, and I look forward to seeing the end products for both, and both of them would probably benefit from programmers aiding them, but it is a rare situation where that happens and it is beneficial. Take a look at ModDB, here's the link:

http://www.moddb.com/mods

ModDB has 8507 mods on it, and out of them, 4,438 have actually been released, the rest are 'Coming soon' and well over fifty percent of them haven't had updates in years. People start projects with grand ideas, vague grand ideas, but then when they get stuck in, they realise what a mountain they have dug into, and then life gets in the way, and rather than spend an evening staring at bits of code to try to figure out why something isn't compiling as it should, they move on, and a team that started out with ten members dwindles down to five, then two and then one, who with a heavy heart realises that he can't do it all on his own and abandons the project.

There are, thankfully, exceptions to the rule, Minecraft, Project Reality, Forgotten Hope, to mention but a few, and if you are serious about your goal then I encourage you to head to a more dedicated Battlestations group, like:

http://battlestations.eu/index.php/en/forum

for example, and make your case there.

Perhaps you can make a new game in the same vein as the Battlestations series, everyone has to start somewhere...but just step back for a moment, realise what a big task it is, and ask yourself 'Do I have the time to sacrifice to this?' and 'Am I prepared to put in a large amount of my time and money into this?' If you cannot find an acceptable answer for either of these questions, then save yourself the trouble and stop right now.

You might also want to consider PMing some of the gentlemen who have done work on Silent Hunter mods in regards to 3D modelling, and perhaps also to some of the other gentlemen on these forums who have their own little projects going. It might give you an idea of the drive needed and the work involved.

I'm not saying don't do it, quite the opposite, but I've seen so many great ideas spark up, release a couple of screenshots and then disappear for all eternity before.

I'd suggest that you go to the forums that they mod in then, because they don't often venture outside of them, or contact them by PM.
This is the General Games forum, there's not that many modders down here...
