Several questions concerning subs and patrol areas

Hello --

I had several questions concerning the choice of submarines and assigned patrol areas when doing a career game.

1. When choosing the submarine to be used, is the first submarine listed in the drop-down menu the most advanced and preferred model, or should I choose the one at the bottom of the list?

2. When going to the assigned patrol area, should I simply navigate to where the objective is listed, and sit there for a period of time, or can I do a search pattern in the general vicinity?

The S-boats are the least advanced, the rest are more advanced. They're listed in chronological order or production.

Once you get there, search within 50 to 75 nm of the dot for targets and prosecute them as aggressively as possible.

When ordered to patrol an area take your compass and draw a circle 50 miles out from the middle of the little symbol, you must stay in approximately this area for about 48 hours and sink some enemy merchants.
