Sh 3 stops loading

Not a pro at posting so I hope I'm in the correct spot. If not sorry and please re-direct me.

Searched the forum and found the method to install SH 3 on windows 7 Home Premium. Followed directions carefully. This was a fresh install on a new machine.. Intel(R) Core (TM) i7-2600CPU@ 3.40 GHz. Radeon 6900. No starforce o board. Used my purchased SH 3 DVD with starforce version. Never started the game after install as directed. Installed the no cd crack. Installed the 1.4b patch. Restarted the computer. No starforce info loaded onto the machine. Then tried to load the game as administrator with compatiability for XP. Tried lower resolutions. Tried to rename the Intro movies. All same result. Games loads as far completing the red bar, screen goes black then comes back to desktop with a large black window superimposed on top of the left corner of the desktop. Can't see starforce being the problem in this case.

Message appears saying that windows stopped loading silent hunter 3 and would search and report the reason if possible. No reason found. I noticed the shortcut has a security shield ( yellow and green and blue colours) on it. My other shortcut icons do not.

If this is not fixable, what about purchasing a newer version. I see ubisoft shop had a download version for $9.99 CND. Is this a safer bet, or will it also have problems. Would starforce from another game cause a problem? I originally tried to install an old GTLegends but was not able to get it to work so I was able to download a free digital version after proving purchase and it is working fine. I have installed SH 4 and the Uboat Mission Custom and it is working fine so far, playing just one single misssion as a test.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I believe the no star force route is recommended.

On the left click " View Problem History "
Scroll down to the top ( latest ) Silent HunterIII entry
Right click then " View problem Details "

Copy and paste whats on that page as can help determine your crash problems

Re looking at your first post
Adding in the NO CD before loading the 1.4 patch will mean the exe is overwritten with the patch
Try adding the NO CD now that you have patched

A bit of a post below but trying to explain all...

Your instructions to follow could not be duplicated exactly on my machine:
1) control panel/brings up the following sections: System and Security, Network and Internet,Hardware and Sound,Programs,User Accounts and Family safety, Appearance and Personalizatio,
Clock, Language, and Region, and Ease of Access.


I clicked on Find and fix problems ( found under System and Security section)

2) Brings up "Troubleshoot computer problems. Off to the left I clicked "View history"
3) This gives a history list under the column heading " Name". Each is titled Program Compatibility with the date off to the right. No indication on program name such as Silent hunter 3. At that time the latest entrey was the one sent to you which had Sh3 info in it. I had to right clicked on the latest SH 3 entry/ clicked on View details/produces troubleshooting report/had to copy using keyboard shortcuts.

Update: Still no success but a change of info for you to think about.

1) To day. Removed SH3 using control panel/Programs/uninstall a program. Rebooted. Silent hunter still on the root directory but not in the list of progams found in the list Programs through Control Panel. Deleted it directly from the root directory. Rebooted. Now gone.
2) ran the remove starforce software. No trace was found.. so it was never on my machine... which I knew anyway.
3) Reinstalled the Sh3 from the DVD. Note: this where my info from previous post was a little incorrect. A) When I installed two days ago (for the first time) when it came to choose default location /Browse , for install, I received a message " Installdriver module stopped working" when trying to change the install location. I could only install in the default location. So I installed in the default location, then cut/paste the Sh 3 to it's new location. All other steps followed after that were as directd in the post.
B) Today, after uninstalling Sh3 as stated above, did registry clean using CClean, reboot, I did a reinstall ( second time now ) , did not move the game this time but left it in the default location Programs Files (X86). Rebooted, installed the 1.4b patch, rebooted, installed the nocd patch for 1.4b patch. rebooted and ran game. The security shield now gone from the shortcut icon but still same problem. Games loads as far as completing the red bar and stops.

so I guess I did follow your suggestion already to install the patch 1.4b first and then the nocd patch.?????

any ideas.
Note: in the View history the two latest entries show no issues detected but the game still does not run.

What about just trying to install just the basic game from dvd, install a nocd patch for the basic game and see if that works???

But what gets me is the inability to install anywhere but only in the default location. The computer seems to have an issue reading from the DVD???

Yes try run the basic game before patching.
If that works then isnt a problem with the base install.

You should be able to install to any location you want esp as inside Program Files causes problems.

Your control panel view needs expanding - on the left side
Am guessing is in Classic View.

You will need to upload to an image share site such as imageshack or photobucket

On the left of your control panel underneath " Control Panel Home "
Click on "Classic View"

Options not possible as discribed. I google "can't find classic view". Told to right click desktop and select it from themes which I did but the view history still presents the same.??? Going through the control panel I have to select "appearance and personalization/Change the theme. Now "Control Panel Home is visible to the left. Under it are Change : desktop icons/mouse pointers/ your account picture. In the center is a large window" Change the visuals and sounds on your computer" . Click a theme to change desktop background....... In the window are several themes including Windows Classic. I selected it but the View history still looks the same.????

Will try the new install later to night if able. What about the digtal download option for #9.99 CND and unlimited downloads, can save to DVD, Requires activation code( five at a time) and can request more, load to as many computers as you wish. I found the site from here under " How to play Silent Hunter 3 without the DVD in thr DVD drive ( starforce free ). Takes you to Amazon. They are selling a SH2/3 combo for $6.99 on DVD??? . Lower on the site is a link to SH3 which takes you to the download option?

Well a complete new install of SH 3 DVD ( US) version followed with the nocd fix for the original game works fine. ... F1 does not give shortcut help and the preview and next views show the surface boats but not your sub.

Had to uninstall Sh3 again to update to 1.4b because it would install the 1.4b patch because of the nocd fix.

Installed original game again, installed the 1.4b patch, installed the nocd fix for the 1.4b patch and the game stops loading after the red bar finishes loading. Same problem as before.

Seems the problem lies with the 1.4b patch or the 1.4b nocd patch??

Any ideas.

Pensioned, I too had those same issues on my machine with the disk version of SHIII.

It was easier to get the latest download version from UBI, as it is already patched to v1.4, and has no starforce to worry about.

Besices the download version is dirt cheap now.

Thanks. I have been considering doing that. Can the download from Ubisoft be modded, example GWX 3.0? i was looking at Gametap found through a post in this forum. It is patched to 1.4 but I don't believe you can make any changes to their downloaded version from reading about it.
