Any other ships that have had as bad a run (in terms of names) as the Porter?

Nice find Oberon.

In the article it says the whole crew was arrested. What happened to them? Were they court martialled?

It says on the next page of the article.

There are worse places to face an inquiry than Bermuda, and after all the appropriate questions were answered, the captain and a few officers were sentenced to shore duty. It could have been much worse. The guy who forgot to disable the torpedo got hard labor, although his sentence was later reduced by Roosevelt himself.

HMAS Melbourne was close. It ran over two friendly warships during manouvres in peace time.:damn:

"The IOWA began evasive maneuvers, yet trained all guns on the William D. Porter. There was now some thought that the W.D. Porter was part of an assassination plot."

That's a lot of guns. :o

Seems to me that HMAS Melbourne wasn't unlucky - the destroyers assigned to guard her were! In each of those cases it looks like the escorts were clearly at fault based on the rules of manuevering at sea.

Just read this.....Captain and entire crew placed under arrest for being the stupidest ship in history. This should be a movie....
Make sure to check the 2nd page, so funny. Ship was exiled to Alaska and a drunk sailor decided to shoot the guns and blew up the flower garden in the front yard of....wait for it.....the base commanders house..lmao.

Yea, pretty bad when the Iowa with FDR got so concerned over the dumb actions that the guns were aimed at it.

Still, minus the many unseemly events, it did serve bravely most the time.

I think the final end of the Porter is truly amazing: you manage to avoid a kamikaze attack only to have the plane skim under your keel and blow you out of the water, essentially being reverse depth-charged by the plane...

I was kind of curious about the person after whom the Porter was named, so I looked him up on Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_D._Porter

Seems a bit of a shame such a capable commander should have as his only namesake a ship that is a bit of o laughingstock to the rest of the world. I say they should give another go at naming a ship after Commodore Porter...
