I was thinking about doing a recorded playthrough, posted to youtube. Something in the vein of a lets play, but I'm going to assume that you're familiar with the basic game.
TMO, other mods maybe, full Switch diff, iron man style (dead is dead permanently), and just seeing how long I survive.
I'd be cutting the boring staring at the map parts and such, and only reloading the game after a quit/crash/major bug.
I could be wrong, but to the best of my knowledge this has never been done, at least not like this. Certainly not a common idea anyways, afiak.
ATM, I'm just gauging if there's any interest, so speak up if you think you'd watch. I'll also leave boat selection up to you guys, so I'd just take whatever's most voted for. Most def want it to be an asiatic fleet game from the start of the war though. Been a while since I played, but if it's still in there, it'll probably be a division 2 (special ops heavy) game. I'll probably start it next week if people are interested.

I'd watch, and I would vote for a Sargo class out of Cavite, Philippines.

As long as there is commentary Ill surely watch.
Absolutely! I enjoy watching the "let's plays". It would be nice to see a new twist to the old game:yep:

Be fun, load up RSRD and get a S boat and I'll give you coords to several early large TF, try taking on the IJN fleet that heads out into the Indian Ocean with an S-boat....fun stuff.

Sh4 playthrough tech experiment part 1 & 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6E2etU6O048&feature=BFa&list=PL312436BF49B34B8E)
This is just some target practice and experimentation with the technical aspect of this project.
So far, 2 votes for S-boats and one for a sargo.
Edit, combined links into a playlist for your convenience.

I say start with an S-boat at Cavite, and promote your way up...
I'll definitely watch (edited to add: no matter which boat you choose).
Great idea, I vote for the Sargo class. I usually start with it. I have not gotten up enough nerve to try the S Class :haha:
I think this is a great idea and looking forward to see how it comes out.

A little more pre-career warmup.
Target practice, s-boat, no tdc, no radar. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2PZVIQR4kA&list=PL312436BF49B34B8E&index=3&feature=plpp_video)
I may do one passive sonar plot and blind shot before starting the career as well, then it's time to kick it off.

Just a small update here. I've been busy painting a relative's house (exterior on top of my regular job). The house should be done about the end of next week/early the week after. I will kick off patrol 1 shortly afterwards. Come to think of it, no promises, but I may actually do patrol 1 this weekend.
It will be an s-boat Philippines 1941 start. You guys are mean for wanting the sugar boat :wah:, but I've actually done it before :D so it's cool.

Fear not, the S boat shalnt let you down. That 4in deck gun can put down any unarmed merchant (though it may take some time :P) and it will save you many torpedos. Unlike that 3in that takes 100 shells to take down a sanpan

What a wonderful project, and I have already learned an easy way to calculate intercept angle :) Can't wait to try it out.
Are you going through the career with map contacts off? If so, I'd be happy to watch your convoy attacks, since they are my weak spot at 100% realism. Surely we can learn much from you, captain :arrgh!:
Edit: I vote for sugar as well, but please upgrade when opportunity arises.
Nice videos. What bearing plotter mod are you using?

Q:
Are you going through the career with map contacts off?
A:
Yes, full switch. Though, because it *is* youtube and you guys probably do want to see some action, I may leave the event camera on. Convoys are easy. Just plot one ship, the rest are on the same course and speed. The merchies will always be in a grid formation with x columns and x rows. The spacing interval is going to be very regular, usually about 500 yards between ships.
Q:
What bearing plotter mod are you using?
A:
I've been using it for a long time, so I'm not exactly sure. However, I believe it's a modified version of the one that came with tmo 1.7. I resized it for 1920X1080 res, fixed the slight alignment issue, and chopped it down to 2000 yards because 3000 was too big and crashed the game. I remember doing the above modifications for a fact, but I'm only about 75% sure that tmo was the source plotter. If someone wants it, I'd be happy to put it online.

Aborted Patrol 1 Outtake - Glitches (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAv-vsOF308)
I tried starting patrol 1 of the video playthrough, and got a whole mess of technical glitches for my trouble. I would normally revert to an earlier save, but since I'm serious about the whole single life thing, I didn't have any. Since this is the case, I'm just calling this attempt a wash, and will save frequently from now on, just for stuff like this. Not sure what caused the problems, but I'm thinking I should probably check my computer fans. I'm cursed in that department, and it looks like the kind of problem they could cause.
Anyways, these are just some highlights of the problems I had.

Looks like you were going to have some fun with a task force. Shame that the game decided to kill itself and replace your crew with what looked like ghosts

Honestly, not a lot happened, bad weather and no radar meant that I just didn't run into much of anything flying the rising sun. Only one merchant encountered. I did happen to run into a ton of friendlies though...

Great presentation, enjoyed it a lot. Very interesting to see how others deal with problems; for instance, a crippled but not-yet-sunk merchant.
Can't wait to see your next patrol!

Good show! :salute:
I always thought it was necessary to align the vertical wire in the periscope with the waterline of the ship in order to measure distance, but apparantly this is not necessary. This is going to save me some time.
I like your no-TDC attack method. Does it have a name? (I want to read more about it.)
I am looking forward to your next patrol :)
Thanks! Looking forward to your next outing! Feel free to use TDC as I could use all the help I can get with manual settings. :)

Just a small note here. I've got the bulk of patrol 2 done I quit before it was fully finished because I was tired. Lotsa action this time and it's got a cliffhanger! Anyways, I've got video encoding/resizing/etc right now. I'll probably start uploading late sunday morning (gmt-7). Expecting it to be live about late sunday evening or early monday morning.
Edit: As always, the assumed cavaet is: so long as nothing goes wrong.

It seems I lied, but in a good way. The vids are uploading now. I'll make them available sometime tonight baring unforseen complications. Of course, I find out after I split the vid that youtube has removed the 15 minute time limit and that this feature has been enabled on my account... Whatever...
ColonelSandersLite
05-26-12, 09:28 PM
The new vids are live. About an hours worth of footage. Some highlights:
A Couple of lone merchants
A Few aircraft
A Photo Recon Op
A large Convoy spotted
The next vids will be me attacking the convoy.

Of note, youtube apparently thinks that part 5 is somehow infringing on "Uwe Bothe Surviving New York City (Discey Remix)" despite not having any music in it at all... Should still be working, dispute filed.

I am impressed to see how accurate your observations are.
There's 2 factors here. First, the experience and attention to detail required to take an accurate measurement. The second is luck. Some of these ships have a completely incorrect mast height. If your measurement is perfect, the wrong mast height will foul up the trig formula and give you the wrong range anyways.
Edit: Unless duci fixed that since tmo 1.7. I really hope he didn't, as the subs often had incorrect data in real life as well.

Stupid question: What is the "Plotter mod"? Is that the circle with the degrees and stuff around the sub?
I did only jump into two of the videos (Pat2Part4 and Pat1Part1), but I guess I will watch some of them every now and then, no matter which sub - but S-boats do always roll with the most style! :)

Of my interest is to see a lets play with TMO(or RFB)+RSRD campaign starting in the Asiatic Fleet whatever sub you want, an shifting to other bases later on if you want to. The list of mods being used added, and 100% realism, plus maps contact updates off ( the biggest cheat in my opinion after automatic targeting), and external camara only used for the video porpusses if used in any case, or even not at all.
Salutes

Hi there,
i was watching the videos and is pretty much harcore playing, good plotting skills and all around. I was wondering if you could post the list of mods you are using besides TMO, and also if you can give some tips on how to manouver towards the ship to get an intercept course which i find a great skill. I usually use RFB but i am going to change to TMO soon. Also just one thing, if you use the PK you only have to take measurements at any intervals, once you get the second click the speed botton and then press the upper right botton and it will tell you the course and speed as estimated from the two measures, then turn on the PK and you can keep doing it as many time as you want as the ship comes coloser an closer. No need for plotting with the TDC+PK.

Now live: Patrol 4 Part 1
Highlights include an attack on a lone merchant and an attack on a convoy.
@msumpsi
I'll answer the mods list question in video when I start the next patrol. I'll also talk some about what you're saying about the tdc when I get to recording the next video. It won't be patrol 4 part 2 (that's recorded, just not live yet), so look for it probably in part 3.

Just a small update here, but I'm currently having technical trouble with this patrol.
I managed to sneak into manilla, as soon as I got close to, what I assume is the carrier I'm supposed to photograph, the game crashed. I got to thinking about it, and I recently played the photo recon single mission with the exact same result (even over several tries). I suspect that there is something wrong with the carrier or maybe it's trying to spawn a plane that has something wrong with it. I'm going to try again soon and see if it'll just work out as an isolated incident, knowing how buggy sh4 is. we'll just have to see what happens.
ColonelSandersLite
01-04-13, 07:23 PM
Problem found (hopefully), after a *lot* of trial and error and experimentation.
On a hunch, I tried taking the graphics settings all the way down and tried the stock photo recon single mission and it played without crashing twice. After that, and some more reading, I tried out the hack that lets sh4 use more than 2 gb of memory and turned the graphics settings back to max. I ran the photo recon mission a couple more times and it hasn't crashed again, so it seems to be fixed.

Watched bulk of Patrol 4, through the mission to Manila Bay. Nicely done.
It was instructive to compare techniques/tactics. Not surprisingly, they're quite similar.
One difference is worth noting. If I was reading the dials correctly, you were running decks awash shallower than I do - looked like 23' to 24'. I run between 28' and 32'. At 28' you can still run on diesels (possibly 29'). To 32' you're still treated as surfaced but you're running on electrics.

I know, from my own testing, that this varies a bit from boat to boat. It probably varies from mod to mod too.
