Just bought my first car! Saw this little beasty from the bus yesterday morning, little did I know I'd be putting a deposit on it the next day lol. I'm really rather excited.

'99 Zuki Vitara JX 4 U Soft-top :D

Nice :DL

Vitara pops up as a choice for my next car, but I'd prefer the Samurai. Can't affford a Landrover and I'm not paying more than €500 for a car thats not 4x4. These Suzuki's are more than capable of going places where a muscle car would die :DL

That's not a car, it's an SUV. :O:

Congratulations either way.

My first car was this:

She was a nice van. How I miss her. :wah:

Could've been yours AJ, you're not a million miles away (just far enough for me not to travel everyday for a Krispy Kreme). :DL

I'm moving on to a newer, but even smaller engined car :o

I'd have loved an SJ but these things are second best and it was too good a deal not to take :) However Defender 90s will always be my fav 4x4, with the exception of maybe UAZ 469s, but they're rarer than rocking horse sh*t

Both, in their own ways. The first car you drive is remembered forever. But then, so is the first one that's truly your own.

I recently acquired a 1986 Chrysler Lebaron from my dad in November. I've put about....4,000 miles on it at least, but man, that car is all class, washed and detailed, it would look like it just rolled off the line. It's not falling apart like the other ones I've seen around here.
Which reminds me that I'm due for an oil change.

(EDIT: This is relevant because the car is registered in my name, and I bought and I pay the insurance on it, I buy the gas, and everything else it needs, and never before have I been so happy to be responsible for something!)

Cheers man, amazingly for a 13 year old vehicle this one only has 30,000 on the clock, mechanically it's absolutely perfect

First buy. I was on my Dad's insurance for a little while after I passed my test so I got to drive his old Mazda 6 but I was a bit paranoid about pranging it so i didn't drive it much lol.

Sorry, I'm not delivering anywhere - you want it, you come and get it. I've sold a Pug 406 on ebay before, three Czech guys living in Germany got the ferry over and took it back with them on the back of a trailer (valves had met pistons!). Bidding finishes in just nine hours, currently going for £143 :yeah:

Me no likey Micras anyway lol

I was dubious about it at first, but I got and the wife got a Ka and now a Fiat Idea (I had to look it up too!), I prefer my Micra - it just goes well, foot down in third is superb for this sort of car - like a go-kart.

There's already been a 'favourite car (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=179304)' thread, but it soon turned into the 'first car' thread. :D

I must admit I have thought about one just for the sheer value of it, cheap car, cheap insurance, good on fuel etc, but I just can't stand the look of them unfortunately lol

Wasn't it said that it would be used off-road?

Funnily enough I ended up having to mount a pavement on my test drive lol. Some idiot came out of a car park right across me on the narrowest road you can imagine and just sat there looking at me as if it was my fault he was in my way, I couldn't back out onto a busy main road... so instead of him just going back into the car park for a few seconds to let me past he proceeded to faff about until I could just about squeeze past on the pavement. Bloody BMW drivers :haha:

need some opinions guys!

Firstly, I'm seriously considering respraying the Vit matt black. Should I? Shouldn't I? I have a thing for matt black vehicles lol

Secondly, I'm considering some decal options. These are the 3 I've come up with so for as possibilities for the doors. Again, opinions? alternatives?

I'd say if it's done professionally, by a professional* body spray company, then yes. If it's you and/or your mate who's got a can of matt black from Halfords, then definately not. Ever. :nope:

An option I'd recommend is body-wrapping (not to be confused with body-popping :D), in my previous life as a domestic appliance engineer we had our vans (http://www.totally-dynamic.co.uk/go/case-studies/v-w-transporter-fleet-for-f-a-thompson-case-study.html) done by Totally Dynamic in Bradford (more over UK now), it's not cheap but I think it's better than a respray (don't even have to inform DVLA). Check out the link to their website - I also had a Mitsubishi Warrier off them for a weekend with a great wrap of a red-eyed tree frog but can't locate it in their gallery.

* Expensive!

ajrimmer42

The point is I don't wanna spend a lot of cash. Then again it isn't gonna be a bodge job, I'm fairly handy with a spray can after 5 years of RC cars and modelling lol. Having said that, as ridiculous as it sounds I'm kinda leaning towards rollering it having seen the finish you can get http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f16/how-hand-paint-landy-pictures-152225.html

Sand it, put some anticorrosion paint on it and spray paint it with something of the same collor so it holds until you scavange a replacement part from somewhere. But trust me, that part is dead.

My frist car was a 1949 Chevy convertible that smelled like brake fluid due to that's what made the convertible top go

some more pictures :) Did a couple of Greenlanes with a mate last week, much fun was had  all legally and sensibly of course!

First up, a nice mild 'lane up near my mate's house, short enough that we did it about 6 times lol, mainly so I could get a feel for how she performs on rough terrain, also the first time we had the front hubs locked and 4wd on :DL

This pic is from the end, of our second trip over there, unfortunately my phone decided to delete the pics I got the first time round :(

The sign lies!!!! Unsuitable for most motor vehicles :yeah:

I received delivery of a recovery bar today which will hopefully be installed on monday (not having one makes any off roading a little hairy as the stock tow hoops have a habit of snapping right off if you try to use them for recovery lol) also gonna have (another) go at removing the front bumper for clearance. We tried yesterday but after realising I didn't have any suitable tools, and being outwitted by my mate's locked tool cabinet we decided to leave it...

Sorry about the ridiculously huge pics btw, any way to easily resize?

Make sure you get the corrosion under control (and kick the dealer where it hurts for not showing it to you before you bought the car...that boarders fraud!).
In it's current state the vehicle wouldn't make it past technical inspection in Germany. So get those parts replaced before the corrosion reaches vital spots of the car.

Make sure you get the corrosion under control

this. bcoz so far it looks as if the corrosion was controlling the car.:DL

(and kick the dealer where it hurts for not showing it to you before you bought the car...that boarders fraud!).

i haven't got into details yet but if you bought the car without being aware of the body state it's only your problem. I mean- you could have checked it. Blaming the dealer now is kinda...you know. Dealers are dealers- they want to sell cars- no matter in how crappy condition they are. You could blame him if the fault was sth like sawdust in the engine, that is sth you couldn't have checked in the place where you bought the car. But corrosion...Besides...you were buying an all-terrain vehicle, so it was kinda obvious that the previous owners did not use the car on the Silverstone only. Don't get me wrong- dealers are freaking cheaters but when it comes to corrosion...

Schroeder
05-12-12, 06:31 AM
I know where you are coming from but that trader definitely is a cheater. As I said I highly doubt that car would get through the technical acceptance test before getting a permit to drive on German streets. I actually even doubt the car can be saved unless a lot of parts are swapped out. If the dealer was hiding all that then "cheater" is one of the nicer words I would call him.

Btw.
In Germany dealers have to give you a one year warranty on a used car they sell you and you can give it back up to 14 days after purchasing it (IIRC that is...).

Betonov
05-12-12, 06:58 AM
What are you talking about. The car is a bit banged (it's a Vitara, it's built to be abused), and then there's that roof holder that was eaten away but apart from that I see no serius corrosion. My car actually has a hole in the door and I pass the technical.

Schroeder
05-12-12, 07:07 AM
Because you don't live in Germany.;)
All I said is it wouldn't pass over HERE. At least not to my knowledge which is limited. Obviously it's still good enough for the UK laws.

ajrimmer42
05-12-12, 10:16 AM
haha, yeah it's just the roof bar thing that's rusted up, the dealer would only have known if he'd have taken the roof down. Since I posted them pics I cleaned it all up, cut off the worst of it and Hammerite'd it all :) Still looking for a replacement. Rest of it seems sound, just some slight surface rust under the arches and stuff but nothing to worry about.

Coil springs, nice. I remember helping my Dad to change his LRs springs from Leaf to Coil, one of the rubber washers holding the Leaf spring bolt in had become so perished that it had welded itself to the vehicle. Had to burn it out with a blowtorch in the end

I believe it's not illegal to remove your bumper, but any revealed edges should be removed/smoothed, lights and plate should be legally positioned and it's advisable to inform your insurance company.

That last part is probably the most crucial, you know how they will use any excuse not to pay up! The police may ignore it, but if they see it often they may pull you and dig deeper into the rest of the car.

Just sayin'. :yep:

Spending the weekend at a local Pay and Play off road centre, soooo much fun. and Muddy as heck :arrgh!:

Even after one run round the "easy" stuff I've really found out the true capabilities of this little beast and wow can it do some stuff! Admittedly I did have to get winched out within about 100yds, but after a very nice bloke in a similarly modified Vit came along and offered to lead us round (followed by a very nice Suzuki SJ to complete the convoy) I went through, and over some things i would never have thought possible, only having to be towed out once. One particular hill I thought totally out of the question after seeing even the guy in front struggle with, he said it would be no problem, and after 3 attempts, each gathering more momentum I made it easily :) very proud of myself for that :D

Unfortunately I didn't get any pics or video of it as both me and Jim were crapping ourselves the whole time...

Anyway, few more piccies :)

I've only ever off-roaded in military Land Rovers and they are astounding what they will get you through/up. Aside from being rolled in the desert, they don't like doing handbrake turns on Brize Norton's 26 threshold - who knew that'd damage the prop shaft.

No one told you how the handbrake works on a Defender?
DOH. I used to do off roading with my dad in a Defender 90 with diff guards, widened track for larger steering angle and fat tyres. It was great fun.

Now my mate at work does off roading and they do extreme winching stuff, would eat the ones in your photos for breakfast and **** them out at lunch.

If I can and he doesn't mind I'll link pictures. Just to say his Defender which is modified has the radiator unit and fan in the back..go figure..

A guy can experiment till he gets it right.

It appears UK laws are not that strict when it comes to body paint.
If one wants to repaint his car here, it would cost him about €100 for the state to change the registration.

Jimbuna
10-05-12, 09:01 AM
In the UK you have to notify the DVLA and your vrhicle insurance provider. They may levy an administration charge to change the details on the documents/policy.

Betonov
10-05-12, 10:25 AM
Here you'll have to take it to a test and there's only one place in the country that does it to see if it affects the handling of the car. Even if it's a paint job

And then get new registration papers.

ajrimmer42
10-05-12, 12:33 PM
yep, here it's just a case of writing the new colour on your V5C registration certificate and sending it to the DVLA. Only costs a stamp. I didn't actually inform the insurer of the colour change last time, forgot lol, but I've declared various mods to it with no problem.

This was my first car, back in 1994, it had a table, a grill, and curtains. A true home from home. Got me to Reading festival, camped on a few grass verges, had some good times with it. Then the brakes packed in and I couldn't get parts. ( pre internet )

My first car was a '75 Triumph Spitfire 1500, and i bought it in England in 1984, in Coventry.
Was recently looking for a "newish" 2003-2005 MG ZT-Tourer, but no luck. Don't like SUVs that much, but i agree there are some advantages. But i think especially those BMW SUVs are b...-ugly. As is the new Range Rover 'Evoque'. Which "Designer" perpetrated this.. thing?!

Acquired in 1969 for $200.00; I drove it for seven years including a cross-continent trip to the Big Apple; wish I still had it!:Kaleun_Crying: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/c1/76/23/c17623593fa17cf462229ff2fc1dac8e.jpg

My first car was one of these: petrol blue with a single wide yellow go-faster stripe down the middle of the roof and bonnet (hood).

I wish I had it too. :D The Impalasof those years were beautiful cars. I find myself gravitating toward them at car shows. Then again, the same thing goes for the GTO's or " Goats " or anything that was well restored.

Was a nice car, very good suspension and a big boot you could enlarge by folding the rear seats, and the retractable roof made it a cabriolet, in summer. A friend of mine had one, was fun to drive with the fascia-located gearlever.
And in comparison my Spitfire 1500 felt like a real sportscar :haha:

Shoulda, coulda, woulda. I have a few cars I said the same thing. Now I ply the back country roads in my 54 Buick. I always wanted a car from the 50's. I was not going to do the shoulda, coulda, woulda on that bucket list item.

Sentiment aside: it's the "stocker shock"! Those puppies go for $35 K+ these days in low-rider country. Driving your cool car is one thing,:smug: having an additional bank account is another. :damn: I had turned it in for $100 on my second car which was really my first 'sports car'... An orange 1976 Honda Civic https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/36/11/f7/3611f7889e977e791b15633af1cf6823.jpgwith McPherson strut suspension:yeah: No A/C(just go faster:salute:) Front wheel drive 1488cc CVCC transverse-engine with choke; bucket seats with 4 stick manual. That puppy lasted me 'till 1992 and 400,000
++ miles appraising homes in the steep roads of the Santa Cruz Mtns. Best car I ever had. Cheap; easy to maintain-when I was still into my own mechanic-werke :nope:; and nimble in all traffic.

OMG, a Katrca (Slovene nickname for the R4) :/\\k:
We used to own one when I was a kid, the thing dind't care about winter. One time my father had to tow my neighbour and it's luxury model Honda Accord up the hill to his house because the R4 eats snow, not just drives over it :D

I really wanted to buy one, but an R4 that's not a chicken coop or a pile of rust costs at minimum €5000 :wah:

It is all what you want to do with your spare time. Obviously it is not a daily driver. However, for me it is my hobby. Some golf, fish, bowling, skeet/hunting and the like. I picked my poison.

I don't have a photo of my first car, a 1970 Mercury Cougar which I bought from the former owner when it was 12 years old.

Just a pencil drawing I did at the time of what that four-eyed monster did to my bank account over the next two years.

Memories...flood the corners of my mind. Misty, watercolor memories of the lemon I owned.

Hi guys, sorry I've not posted in a while, still keep calling in here occasionally.

Yep still got the zook, toned down the paintwork a tad and got a new roof and tyres in the last year or so. I also finally managed to get some Chevy Tracker badges off ebay too :)

Yeah, the 1600 Cortina was the Brit muscle-car of the 70's (the Capri was for poofs).

^Oh yeah! You made my day mate.:haha:

In case of my Cortina-L, the muscles only relied on the sleek coke-bottle style 2-door bodywork, short sporty gear shifter an a race car like dasboard.

The engine delivered meager 68 din HP with 0-60mph acceleration ~18 sec. and top speed close 145 km/h.:) But-but, that was not all. The 11-12 liter petrol consumption per 60 miles for a 1600cc engine was nothin but meager. BEAT THAT!:smug:

...Now, let's look for a "My second car" thread. I'm itching to get bragging about it.

Really?

I remember my 2.8i making a lot of other so-called 'masculine' cars look totally inadequate, especially on the motorway but in all honesty, I never ever took her up to her rated top speed of 140mph....even at a young age I'd like to think I had more sense than some speed kings.

My first car that I have bought is the Renault Kwid which is special among small
hatchbacks.
https://cdn.autoportal.com/img/new-cars-gallery/renault/kwid/exterior/renault-kwid-8707e8a0.jpg
The Renault Kwid (https://autoportal.com/newcars/renault/kwid/) is an entry-level car which is very popular among first-time buyers. The vehicle gets a pretty decent engine which is a combination of a sufficient power and good mileage. However, some of the people would definitely have a question that why Kwid holds a special space among small hatchbacks.
