Are there any mods in existence to speed up Silent Hunter 3 on older systems (such as removing water reflections etc...

Welcome aoard, Moorkey!
You could probably get more help (from people wiser than me) if you gave your specs. From my experience, I wasn't able to make SH3 work on a laptop modern enough to have a dual core CPU but not modern enough to handle the game on a single one. Also, if it's your graphics card that lacks memory, I don't think there is much to do.
If your SH3 is already patched, you can choose the "lite" options, if you have GWX (which is great but it needs a good system), but any supermods will slow your game compared to vanilla.
Good luck!

First thing I can think of is GameBooster it's free and can be found here:

As Kpt. Weyprecht suggests, post your specs and lets see what happens
Oh and welcome aboard Kaleun !
Best regards.

ya your specs would help, but it wasnt long ago I played SH3 on a single core from 2004/5.

Welcome Moorkey...I'm afraid your otions are limited if your struggling with SH3 stock/vanilla.

try this http://alacritypc.kensalter.com/
it DID work wonders for my old rig. it is a little complicated to set up, but patience pays off! :yep::yep:
i could shut down nearly 100 background programmes that were eating at my computer power that i needed for my SH3+GWX.
there is an easy walk through guide to download too. this is what i found very helpful as i am not a techno head.
could you maybe buy yourself some more RAM - would this help?
in the end AlacrityPC was what kept me at sea - without it i could not have played my FAVORITE sim - good luck with it:salute:
The max RAM your computer can use will be a big help. Plus a good graphics card. Enjoy SHIII. Life as you knew it will never be the same from now on. You are now a Silent Hunter and SubSim junkie. :03: Good hunting! :salute:
You could also try installing the GWX mod and running the "Black Sea Missions" (or Indian Ocean) only. This will allow you to only operate within a smaller area but the upside is that the game will not be running all the rest of the combat areas. Although I haven't tried this myself it is described in the instruction manual that you get with the GWX mod' and should speed up the load up time too.
I am currently running SHIII with GWX on a machine that is about 9 years old. It can be a bit framey at start up but I can just about get away with it.
Good luck.

I'll second the Game Booster recommendation. It works wonders with my six or seven year old mid level notebook. I've not actually had to use it for SH3, which runs more than adequately without it, but if set up correctly, GB can make it seem like ya dun replaced your whole machine with a brand new one. I've heard it even scores a significant performance increase with newer and higher end machines. Best of all, it's freeware. Another tip, I recall there seem to be a few 'hidden' settings for anti-aliasing and such tucked away in an ini somewhere outside, think it's under an SH3 subdirectory in "My Documents" or the like. If ya know what yer doin', ya might just try manually tweaking some settings down, or even disabling them if it lets ya. Just make a .bak copy first, hehe. Depending on the machine, and where it's bottleneckin', things like that can often make a world of difference.
