The best reason to buy this game? You can become a porn star. Yes, that's right - a porn star.

Fallout 2 also has one of the most sadistically annoying starting levels I can recall. On the other hand, you can recruit a deathclaw into your party, so I guess it sort of makes up for that...

You're a week or so too late for that. But you can get it relatively cheap now along with Fallout 2.

Yes Fallout 2 does have a very annoying starting though there is way at least to avoid the villager fight and you can run away from all of the ants and radscorpions in the test.Of course I find that though the first quarter of FO2 is fairly hard if you avoid too many battles it hurts you long run because you miss out on the XP.The first time I played FO2 i got tired of not having any ammo or good weapons so I walked up to Tubby in Den and blew his head off and took all that he had that made things a little easier.
By the way make sure that you guys get the Fallout and Fallout 2 highres patches makes the game look much better though with a larger screen it might be too small to go fullres but it does make the game look better you see more area. link to fallout2 highres fallout is in the same thread :

How does Fallout 1 and 2 work on windows 7 and multicores?
The main question I ask when considering old games. Been burned, just saying.
Fallout 3 needs file tweaks to work right on my os and quad core.
Though New Vegas works right, wouldn't mind going back to the source, just do not want to be disappointed when I need a degree in computer science to get it to run.:DL

I've had some problems running my original disk version of Fallout, but both Fallout and Fallout 2 from GoG work perfectly on my system (My CPU is slightly outdated, but it's still multi-core).

I have a store bought new copy that had FO1,FO@ and FO Tactics on one disk (I have seen it at Target very often you can likely find it online from Amazon or the likes had the originals but they got lost at some point or another) they run just fine for me just run them as admin without the highres patch they sometimes get screwed up colors and you have to exit out and come back in for me either the fan patches or the highres patch fixed this issue other than they should run just fine.
I have an older (2008 VIsta 32bit) PC with a quad core no issues at all besides what I mentioned above and that can be fixed as described above. They are fairly old games so they put very little demand on your PC really at all I just checked and Fallout 2 uses only 40,264k on my PC Steam is using 147,084k open and 22,000 in the background.
Having just loaded up FO2 the highres patch is what fixes the crazy colors problem it allows you to run the game in 32 colors(Vista and Win7 do not like older 16 and 8) .When you run the game remember if you started it as admin or not as the saves show up only one way or the other I use both to be allowed twice the save space. The fan patch for FO1 FO2 is worth getting for sure as well.
Soopaman I would go to a Target store and buy the 3 pac(all on one DVD) it should work fine for you.
I had some crashes in FO3 here and there (cant complain I run a number of mods) then I purchased Shogun 2 and it kept crashing on me so I had to do the command prompt thing that made Shogun stop crashing and also since then I have had no crashes with FO3 crashes in FONV are very rare for me and within acceptable levels(which has been none is some time) I have never had a crash with any of the old FO games.
Here is a link to the command prompt fix I am no PC wiz so i do not know if this will also work with Win7 (I am guessing that it will) what it does is allow more memory use you do need to have at least 2GB or more of RAM though(pretty sure that you do based on your game library).Like I said after doing this Shogun has never frozen up on me again and FO3 ran notably better as well.
