For quite some time now Sailor Steve and others have wanted the inclusion of ship names in SH5. Possibly this has been discussed already but it occured to me after sinking my last freighter that this is already there. Using TheDarkWraith mod New UIs with TDC when an enemy ship radios for help by putting out an SOS it proclaims its name. Not all ships do this but some will.
The first ship I sunk in the convoy when down fast. I must have hit the sweet spot because there was no time for them to radio for help. The next ship was much smaller but went down slow. This ship sent out an SOS proclaiming its name and position.
It was easy for me then to enter the name of the ship into my log included with TheDarkWraith mod. I'll keep up this discipline and see how many ships I can identify by name on the rest of my patrol.

That's something I've been wanting for some time too. Not that it's all that important, but getting messages about ships you've been sinking with names that obviously would have never been used by that nation is a minor distraction.

The game doesn't expose what nationality the contact is. Hell it doesn't even tell you if it's friendly or not. It gives me position info that's all. I don't even know what type of contact it is (plane, sub, ship, etc.)

The British ship I sunk had the name Montebello. I suppose that is exactly what you are talking about. I would think once we find where these names are being pulled from they could be replace with the list we used in SH3.

The report I got had ship position, type and tonnage. Is that because I check the target in the rec manual? The name came from the radio of course. The nationality I record in the log from the flag chart.

I can tell you where those names are coming from since my UIs mod (and the stand-alone radio messages mod) takes the names from it: \data\RadioMessages\WWIIShipNames.txt

All versions since SH3 have had names applied to the listing in the Roster file for the ship type, but they didn't work in SH3 or SH4. Dan told me a long time ago that SH5 would indeed give ships names. Of course I was very excited about this, and the only thing keeping me from exploring it further is the sad fact that my computer doesn't run SH5. If that's indeed where the names come from I can edit the files and send them to someone, since I still have it on my PC, even if it doesn't run.
The biggest problem I see right now is the lack of merchant types available. I can do names for the ones that are there, but that's at most a few hundred names, and I have thousands of names for hundreds of different ship types. Still, it could be a start. :sunny:

Yes that is a start and if you edit the file I would love to have a copy as I sure others would too.

\WWIIShipNames.txt is a simple list of names. I don't know if there is any relationship made with the nationality or the type of ship these names get applied to.
Just for fun below is a screen capture of one days entry into my journal. As you can see I clean out most of the log entries pulled from the message box.
