Hi everybody, i'm new in this forum and i'm glad to find this place plenty of veteran kaleun and lovers of this great game. I've bought this game recently (via steam) and i improved it quickly with GWXGold mod. I began a carrer, and first problem.... when i choose a starting port i have 3 options: Willhelmshaven, Kiel and.... LA ROCHELLE !!!!! in august 1939.... Moreover the map is wrong and when you pick over one of them you start from another one... ¿anybody had the same problem as me?

¿any suggestion?¿whats the better mod for sh3?

Thank you

My guess is you have a corrupted install. I never had that problem during the time I played GWX.

Yeah that ^

Even stock was fairly close to accurate. I'd rEmove any jsgme mods, if that doesn't work, reinstall.

Welcome to SubSim.

Are you using SH3 Commander?

If so have you installed the SH3 Commander cfg file?

Your three choices of port in August 39 should be Willhelmshaven, Kiel and Konigsberg.

Well, i don't have sh3 commander mod, so i suppose that i should remove everything and reinstall game and GWX supermod. I will try again.

And now just a last question. What's the most interesting supermod for sh3 in your opinion?: GWX, NYGM or LSHIII...

Thank you very much for your help

WELCOME ABOARD! :sunny:

All three of the mods you mentioned are great, and each offers a different experience. There is also WAC.

SH3 Commander is the perfect companion to any of them. It affects your career the same way as the supermods affect gameplay. You will have a more realistic crew loadout, the ability to adjust many in-game parameters with a single click, the ability to randomize events such as having your sub's skin change on a certain date, and every ship you sink will get a listing with its name, cargo, crew aboard and crew lost. It's the single most important tool for the game (at least in my opinion). :D

That sounds really great... sh3 commander mod. I'll get it. I understand with your comment that this mod is compatible with all of supermods isn't it?

So, first i install sh3, then i install GWX (for example) and finally i install sh3 commander?

Thank you

Actually SH3 Commander is a stand alone mod that works with SH3. It is installed outside of SH3. I would recommend getting Sailor Steve's ships name mod to go with SH3 Commander, it adds a lot more names for the ships.

As HW3 said, Commander doesn't care when you install it, at least where the supermods are concerned. It's kind of hard to get it to work if you install it before SH3. :D

I does install to it's own folder outside the game, and runs things from there. With GWX there is a special file needed. You can get it from the link above Jimbuna's signature.

I did finally reinstall and everything works fine. Its amazing how sh3 can change with GWX... it really seems to be another game. Marvellous work of developpers, really great and involving experience of game. Fantastic!!!! :yeah:

Now i'm playing my first carrer and i begin to have some questions. I'll try to simplify:

- In GWX the ships has no identifying colours (enemy, neutral...). Can i get it with a compatible mod? (i'm new and a little lazy)

- I also would like to keep the little tail or trail over my sub and over ships indicating route. I find it really difficult without it.

- When i receive messages from bdu or other subs (i like this improvement) i'm not sure of understand the informations displayed such as "W (number), Sea (number) or about convoys (4 numbers and two letters). I've been searching in this forum but i didn't find anything about it.

- Finally in sh3 commander there is an option called model effects. I've read the information in the guide but i'm not sure of understand it. It's an option to enter malfunctions in our sub? and we receive messages about this malfunctions or we must guess? can we repair these malfunctions or must we return to base? do you recommend me to activate this option?

That's all for the moment. I'm just new and i'm a little lost.

Thank you for your help and patience:salute:

Here is the link to Jimbuna's Gamefront page. You'll see a mod called GWX-Contact_Color.7z. It will restore the colors and, I think, the tails as well, though I don't know because I like the realism of not knowing so I've never used it.

- When i receive messages from bdu or other subs (i like this improvement) i'm not sure of understand the informations displayed such as "W (number), Sea (number) or about convoys (4 numbers and two letters). I've been searching in this forum but i didn't find anything about it.
First you should understand that most of those messages are from real life and are for immersion (to make it feel real) only and aren't really ships in the game. The ones with "W" or "Sea" are weather reports. "W" is for wave height and "Sea" refers to the Sea State, which is from the Beafort Scale. Both are also from real life and have nothing to do with the game.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaufort_scale

The convoy contacts are Kriegsmarine Grid coordinates. The game only goes to Letters and Two numbers. The other two numbers show the position within the grid itself.
http://uboat.net/maps/grid.html

Again the game doesn't go to four numbers, so if you see that it's just to make you feel like other things are happening in the world, and doesn't really work in the game.

It is for malfunctions and sabotage. I believe you can enable malfunctions only or enable malfunctions/sabotage together.

No, there is no notification. Things just quit working. You just hope you don't discover them at a bad time.

There's no way to repair them I believe unless you save and re-load. IIRC, the malfunction dissappears when you reload. Depending on severity, I'll wait a bit to do that. I even gone out of my way and docked at a supply ship to get "repairs". I think I was having a fuel leak. My range at current speed would barely get me to my patrol zone.

Besides a fuel leak, I've had issues when going to Flank speed, it would go to stop instead. Embarrassing and dangerous in a crash dive. I seem to remember a periscope issue as well. I'm sure there are other problems that I haven't seen or noticed.

Definitely activate them. They do add a little spice at times, but I don't worry about them until I find them. I don't activate the sabotage option unless I'm based somewhere other than Germany.

Oh yeah....Welcome aboard!

hahahahaha really? well, it's not a nice place but at least sun :sunny:and "fiesta" :woot:is guaranted and we have an old spanish submarine docked in the port that can be visited.
I imagine you come from England cause here there are a lot of british people living and working among us.

One more thing... i heared that sh3 commander let you create patrol logs with informations about ships sunken (names, cargo and crew lost) but i only get the names of the ships. How must i do in order to obtain the informations about crew lost and cargo?

Thanks

Bottom right of Commander, actions, update career then patrol logs.

Mysanthropus
04-21-12, 06:47 AM
Yes i do that, but my problem is that in my personal file i only obtain information about ship's names but no info about crew and cargo. In fact, the only options in action's menu are:update your personal file, review patrol logs, manage your crew, nightclub and delete carrer.

I have activated the option use real ship names in patrol logs and in the pdf manual of sh3 commander said that:

"Use real ship names in patrol logs: Select this option to replace the generic Silent Hunter III
ship names (ie ‘C3 Cargo’) in the patrol logs with real ship names and (where known) cargo and crew details."

Jimbuna

Have you tried reviewing the patrol and then selecting the update option?

Sailor Steve

Which version of Commander are you using? If 2.7 then you won't get details, just names. Only the latest 3.2 version http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=2923 gives the details.

Mysanthropus

I'm using last version of sh3 (3.2)

Here is my first log, i thought that crew information of sunken ships was offered (deads, survivors...) and information about cargo but maybe i'm wrong.

http://www.upl.co/upload/h4Xu7Rj0X

So, it's just this information what we get from personal files log in sh3?

Thanks

No, it should say something like:

SS Fantasmagorica (Medium Tanker) 5872 tons. Cargo: Crude Oil. Crew: 48. Crew Lost: 17.

I can't show you a Commander log because I rewrite mine to tell the story of the attack, and relist all the sinkings together at the bottom, so it doesn't look the same.

[edit] Here is the last page from one of my patrol logs. You can see how I've written in my notes so it reads like a real log, with the sinkings collected at the bottom. I didn't change anything, just grouped them together. Also note that after you've saved your log it will show up in SH3 when you reload the game.

Check that you have Commander set to Auto Rollback. That may make a difference.

Steve,
How do you get that info to show up in your in-game logs? I've never seen that happen. :hmmm:

I think I have 3.2 but I'm not 100% sure right now. I need to double check the version of SH3Commander I'm using.

Once you've saved your Commander log, the next time you boot up SH3 just go into your career and look at the log. It will be there.

Wow! I knew you could edit things in the patrol results in Commander but I never knew it would show up in game. That is cool, I'll have to play around with it some.
Thanks.

The things that are possible with Commander are amazing. A big :yeah: to JScones for developing this addition to SH3(as well as JSGME).

Well, i've been investigating and i've finally found the problem, but i'm not sure of doing the right even if i get my personal files with all the informations (name, cargo and crew).

I realized that the file called ship_names i had in my cfg folder of sh3 commander (after executing sh3commander config for gwx) hadn't cargo and crew informations. So what i've done is just replace this file with the old file (wich had all the infos) and voilà. Now it's everything ok apparently. But i don't understand why the exe file for cfg with gwx install the file without cargo and crew (288kb) and the old one has all the informations (211kb)

I also would like to know if this mod called "Sailor Steve's ships name mod" is better and come with more names, cargos and crew, where can i find it and how to install (¿via jgme or overwritting ship_names file in sh3 commander?).

Thank you very much for your help :salute:

GWX was released before the other mod so go to the downloads section and grab Steve's latest file update...you won't be disappointed.

D'OH! :damn:

I should have thought of that. The 3.2 version should have all the information, but if yours didn't, then it didn't. Sorry about that.

Yes. I've dedicated a large part of my time to adding names to the Commander files. I was doing an update every month, but last year that was put on hold. Now it's back and all is explained in this thread.
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=193941

How to install it is explained in the readme, but it doesn't hurt to expain it again. Just put it in the SH3 Commander folder and overwrite it. I will have a new one for the first of May. :sunny:
