View Full Version : DUD without DUD on ?

Ok one thing that I did and saw was when I fired a torpedo at the ship (Fletcher Class DD) the torpedo came in at about 70 degrees port it hit the target and then.......................... :k_confused:no boom. :har:
I was playing on low difficulty. How da hell did that happen?
The Destroyer's crew were having beer and celebrating until I fired another torpedo which they dodged but then the DD turned around and then boooooooooooooom.:Kaleun_Cheers::D They went faster than the torpedo and yeah boom.

Not sure how the dud settings work in this sim, to be quite honest.
I've had them on since day one, but the only time I get one is when I make the mistake of trying to use the magnetics for a boom under the keel. I have yet to see that work, and I have fired full salvos at different depths in calm waters just to make sure. All duds. With impact pistol at 2-3 meters, though, they go boom every single time.
But the magnetics are utterly useless. Which is probably historically accurate since they didn't really become reliable until '41-'42. Still, just one, ONE detonation would be nice.
Do you mean it was actual dud torpedo (hits the ship alright, but just bounces off the hull without explosion) or premature explosion (explodes before hitting the sub)? I have NEVER ever seen a actual dud torpedo in SH 5 if imported SH 4 ships don't count. The premature explosions work just like they should (magnetic torpedoes explode before hitting the sub). Basic impact torpedoes don't cause premature explosions.
If you have witnessed a 100% pure DUD torpedo with SH 5 ship, that's breaking news and tells that there is somekind of dud system that works once in a lifetime. If so please tell all the details that you remember, I have spent weeks digging in to this matter...
If the target was really close there is a possibility the torp hadn't cleared its minimum range that is, it wasn't "armed" yet.
:hmmm:

Yes it actually bounced off and didn't blow up.

I could be that, it was pretty damn close. I never got a chance to gauge the distance though

Yes, that is the most probable cause as the distance was so short. Just one more example that the actual torpedos work just right. It's something that is missing or different with the SH 5 ships that makes duds impossible.

when looking at torpedo not exploding issues dont forget:
if the angle is steep you can glance off the ship without detonating which looks like a dud but you just have too sharp an angle to strike the firing pin and the torpedo stops and sinks away. (in real life it should glance off and keep going)
also i have seen if the prop hits the side of the torp before the head hits the ship you get the same non explosion and the torpedo stops and sinks away

That's a possibility. The torp doesn't arm until about 300 meters if I remember correctly.

Actually I had a torpedo that skid along the side of a ship. Then it turned to another direction and went for another ship. Unfortunately it missed the other ship.
repeat it actually slid/skid or whatever you want to call it across the side of the ship. Yes it the sides touched each other. I think that that's rare in game. :rotfl2:

I see duds...when the torp hits a subnet it turns into a dud (stops and sinks)

yes if it doesnt actually bump into anything, it needs some sort of angle to trigger it to stop, if not then it will keep going
now if it turned and went after another ship then im guessing it must have been acustic

I fired a salvo into a convoy the other day, one was defo on target and the other 3 went into the pack. Now the one on target struck at a near right angle and just BOING bounced of the side "okay a dud they do exist, no problem ! the other 3 check them" I thought, and to my astonishment they all stopped shortly after the first dud struck and sank to the bottom. All torps set to piston fire range at fire was 1k min and all 4 were dud's.
:o was my reaction, then the DD's came to see what all the fuss was about :timeout:
So my first experience of dud's was a salvo fire and it was all 4 lol :har:
