Just started playing SH4 (gold edition). I know I will have questions re mods, etc, but for now I have a couple of "duh" questions I can't find answers to:

1. My cursor - when I use the mouse to position the cursor over an icon (periscope, select tube, fire, etc.) I end up playing chase the cursor. It seems to have an awful lot of "momentum" and is tricky to get it where I want.
Q: is this a game feature? or is it adjustable somewhere? or do I need to go into my computer settings for the mouse?

2. Torpedoes - I've just recently tried manual targeting primarily with the "school" torpedo practice -- Large, slow target at short range. When I check the torpedo settings they are always set to slow speed. If I intend to shoot a 3 fish spread, do I have to select each tube, go to torpedo settings and set speed and depth for each? or is there a way to set it as a default?

3. Torpedo tube doors. If I select the tubes I am going to use and open each door, do they stay open as I select the tube to fire or do they automatically close when I select a different tube.

For example I want to shoot tubes 1,2,3. I select #1; then set depth, speed, set the spread, and press "Q". Then select #2 do the same. Then select #3 and do the same. Now when I have the correct setup and select #1 to fire, is everything as I had set up with the door open? or do I have to do the setup and open the door and shoot before selecting another tube.

4. When shooting a spread using the torpedo settings in the TDC, do I have to do anything other than setting the spread angle and firing? Does the TDC know that shots 2 and 3 are each offset? or am I missing something?

Since I'm new to SH4, each time I try to check I seem to get a different result (probably because I'm not doing everything the same way each time). So I appreciate your help.

Thanks
Tom

Welcome aboard! :arrgh!:

1. No idea why that happens, hopefully someone else can enlighten you.

2. Yes, you have to do it for each torpedo. Mind you, not torpedo tube, but torpedo. So, once you've fired a fish, you'll have to do it all over again for the next one loaded.

3. All the tubes you've opened will remain so until a) you've fired the torpedo, or b) you've gone below the max. firing depth.

4. Unlike settings for speed and depth, spread angle will stick for the remaining tubes, i.e. if you've set a 1 degree port offset, it will remain there for all the torpedoes fired unless you adjust it again.

My guess is that the mouse problem is not related to the game.

The rest of the questions are answered above by our friend from outer space who has somehow managed to pilot a submarine.

Check out the Skipper's Bag of Tricks thread in this forum, and download the Noob tutorial. The Noob tutorial will give you an overview of the obstacles you will soon try to overcome.

Fellow noob ---- good to have the company. Welcome!

Edit: I have the mouse problem also. I just deal with it, frustrating as it is. Would be helpful if anyone knows how to address mouse settings...

Mouse problem could be related to your video card. Had that problem and my video card was incorporated in the motherboard, I installed a video card with it;s own memory and had no more mouse problems.

Were you at work when you posted it? (I hope so!)

Re the mouse. I did slow down the mouse in the windows control panel. It helped a little.

I also tried using a torpedo spread in the school torpedo scenario. What I found is that I needed to set the spread angle for each torpedo just before I shot it.

I aimed at the center of the cruiser and entered AOB, range, speed and bearing. Then I went to the torpedo settings part of the TDC and set the speed and depth for the torpedos in tubes 1,2,3, and opened the doors.

Took a second bearing and range and prepared to shoot.

Selected tube 1, set left 3 degrees spread and fired.
Selected tube 2, set 0 degrees and fired
Selected tube 3, set right 3 degrees and fired.

Hits were first at aft mast, second center, third fwd mounts.

Tried again and on the second attempt the cruiser zigged, I screwed up AOB and the spread missed.
