Smoke on the water. Before I know it I'm in pursuit of two ships which I get close enough to ID as British. Too close. They change course and I go under to wait for them to return to there original heading. After some time I surface and follow the logical heading to intercept at dusk. All things come together as planned and the two of them are spotted.

The attack was the usual fair of firing off a few fish. One miss and one hit on each target. One hit was all it took for each to eventual go down. Nice work. Except coming in for a closer look I notice these weren't the same two I encounter earlier in the day. Oh, they're flying Iceland flags. The men in the life boats are now close enough that I hear there screams for help.

Suddenly a chilling sensation comes over me. Will this end my career?

If Iceland is still neutral, avoid neutrals and friendlies for 24 hours. After that, business as usual. ID mistakes will happen and historically did happen. Lay low for a day and resume your patrol.

Yeah. Other than the renown hit for sinking the neutral and being branded "renegade" for 24 hours, there are no real consequences. Erich Topp sank the USS Reuben James because he mistook it for a British* destroyer. Despite American outrage, that wasn't enough to get America into the war.


*This was due to the "Bases for Destroyers" agreement between Great Britain and the United States. The US gave Britain its surplus Wickes Class and Clemson Class destroyers. Reuben James was a Clemson class destroyer defending a British convoy. Given the conditions, it would have been a logical conclusion that the target was a Town Class (former Wickes or Clemson) Lend-Lease.
