View Full Version : What is that sound?

Dec '41, in an S-boat off the NW tip of Luzon, I'm at silent running, 190' deep, in the middle of a Japanese convoy at anchorage. They are circling slowly above me. Periodically I'm pinged. I also hear collision alarms and battle station alarms.

But I hear something else: a high-pitched "whing" or "whistle", as if something has been shot through the water at my boat.

Can someone identify this sound for me? 'Twould give me a better idea of what is going on up top. Thanks!

This is just a guess, but you could be hearing the sound of American planes attacking the fleet above you. Is the sound your hearing through your sonar :06:.

I was in the Philippine Sea once during a big sea battle, at 170 feet and could hear the ships AA guns, and collision alarms going off during a plane attack. When I came up to take a look there was this huge plane vs ship battle going on.
Check your sonar to see if you hear ships being sunk, do a slow 360 degree sweep around you boat. The sound is like a echo pounding as ship heads for the bottom. If you don't hear that sound the go to 60/65 feet and take a quick look, but be ready for anything when you do.:D

The sound is similar to a bullet whistling through water, but at 190' depth. I'm pretty sure American planes are not involved. The hour is 0230 and no ships have been sunk --- I've kept track of them all.

Strangely, two are burning --- one that I torpedoed and one, a destroyer, damaged before I fired torpedoes ---- possibly in a collision (?). On an earlier patrol I watched two Kongos run over three circling destroyers. Crazy bug?

Maybe there is something peculiar about my system, which deforms some other sound into the "bullet whistling" sound.

I dunno!

What version of SH4 are you running:06:
Do you have any mods installed in the version your running:06:

I noticed when I was playing the un-modded SH4 v1.5 that when destroyers were looking for me some times the decoys I dropped to escape made them go a little crazy. Another words I saw one night them dropping depth charges then backing up and all most sinking them selves because the charge with off under there ship. I also saw one on fire and I didn't do a thing to it yet:D.

I don't know if that is a bug in the stock game mybe some of the more expereced guys at this site would have the answer. I noticed that after I modded my game to TMO / RSRCD I haven't see that happen yet.

I recently installed TMO/RSRDC, but no differences as yet are apparent to me. I'm wondering if the mods "took", or if I did something wrong with the Jones Installer. I have SH 1.5.

In the read me file for one of these mods --- I forget which --- doesn't it say that there is only one Akizuke destroyer in the game? The convoy I'm stalking is escorted by seven Akizukes ... which makes me think I may have done something wrong with the installer.

If your loading screen is different, you've installed at least TMO correctly. As for the destroyer, two things: I don't know if Ducimus intended the Akizuki to be unique in the campaign, since I've never played TMO alone. However, when it comes to campaign missions, ship and convoys composition etc, what you're seeing is the work of RSRDC, since it overwrites the campaign settings of TMO. There's a "special" version of the Akizuki available in a single mission: the "Bungo Pete".
