Here in Los Angeles, preceeding and during the 1984 Summer games, we had the same sort of reports and predictions coming out from all quarters. We managed to survive; in fact, most residents gave the Games wide berth and the impact was fairly negligible...

Although, the opportunity to invade the UK under guise of the Games and finally takeover and force you to drive on the right side of the road is tempting... :D

And that from the people who gave us BSE ...

"The first confirmed animal to fall ill with the disease occurred in 1986 in the United Kingdom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom), lab tests the following year indicated the presence of BSE; it was only in November 1987 that the British Ministry of Agriculture accepted it had a new disease on its hands.[23] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bovine_spongiform_encephalopathy#cite_note-22) Subsequently, 165 people (up until October 2009) acquired and died of a disease with similar neurological symptoms subsequently called vCJD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creutzfeldt%E2%80%93Jakob_disease), or (new) variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bovine_spongiform_encephalopathy#cite_note-NCJDSU-4) This is a separate disease from 'classical' Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creutzfeldt%E2%80%93Jakob_disease), which is not related to BSE and has been known about since the early 1900s. Three cases of vCJD occurred in people who had lived in or visited the UK."

I feel sorry for the normal Londoners trying to work in what is going to be a mess. The ZIL lanes, for one thing which will get the buses stuck in traffic because the bus lanes have been converted to ZIL lanes. The major tube interchanges, normally busy at rush hour, will be a nightmare.

Getting to the Olympics will be a doddle, they've got that all sorted out...but actually doing anything else...could be messy.

STEED

The ZIL lanes are not open for ambulances I hear! :o

This better not be the case, if I was a ambulance driver with someone in the back needs to get to A+E fast I would tell these hot shot flash pants to get out the bloody way.

Question: What is the difference between Los Angeles and yogurt?

Answer: Yogurt has a living culture.

You wren't kidding about the chemical option! From Wikipedia:

Surströmming …, Swedish "soured (Baltic) herring") is a northern Swedish dish consisting of fermented Baltic herring. Surströmming is sold in cans, which may bulge after prolonged storage, due to the continued fermentation. When opened, the contents release a strong and sometimes overwhelming odor, which explains why the dish is often eaten outdoors. A Japanese study has shown that the smell of a newly opened can of surströmming is the most putrid smell of food in the world, beating similar fermented fish dishes such as the Korean Hongeohoe or Japanese Kusaya.

I am awed by the extent to which the Nordics will torment the poor herring. Surely there must be some sort of provision in the Geneva Accords to stem this sort of bio-chemical warfare... :DL
