Even though this happened a few days ago, it got me thinking. Could you imagine the sheer terror you would feel having a 13 foot long Great White shark bearing down on you?

I'm having fish tonight then.

Seriously though RIP to the victim. The White Pointer is not a shark I want to ever meet in my life time that's for sure. I'm not opposed to culling their numbers so long as they're reasonable and the pointers can maintain their population.

Why cull a certain species of shark when the article confirms no specific species at all?

And taken from another source (http://www.metro.co.uk/news/894823-diver-killed-in-latest-australian-shark-attack) -

Experts believe different species are responsible for the other recent deaths.

We are entering their territory, what gives us the right to cull them (whatever them is) but them not to cull us - all for the sake of a few more deaths than normal? Possibly just a statistical blip and not the norm. :hmmm:

^This, we can't always force nature so it'll suitable for us just over some unfortunate fatalities.

And I think we are doing enough to sealife as it is with overfishing some of the waters.

I agree 100% when you go into the ocean then you are entering there territory.

Culling is not the answer. If we enter their domain, then we can expect to become prey now and then.

Not to go too offtopic, but we have this same discussion periodically here. Not concerning the sharks obviously, but the wolves. There are, as far as I know, less than 200 wolves in Finland and they occasionally eat dogs as well as cattle, but there hasn't (again AFAIK) ever been a confirmed case of wolves killing a man.

Yet we periodically go hysterical about them: "OMG, someone saw a something that looked like it might have been a wolf?! Or a stray dog? Or a fox? No matter!! Kill all wolves before they come into our houses, eat our babies and drink our beer from the fridge too!"

Could you send some of those sharks to Ore-gone? They could help clear out some of the seals here.

I agree, that culling isn't an answer. With all the great whites around Australia, wouldn't you think twice before going in diving?

Why would you need culling if you have this nonsense going on?

Don't like biting fish - don't swim in the ocean then.

It is amazing how much irrationality there is involved when you say "shark". How many incdents are there per year, how many - or better: how few get get killed per year by shark attacks? 80-120 incidents per year, withg around every tenth being lethal. Millions of sharks get killed each year in nets, by hunting, culling, of getting caught for their fins, and then thrown back ionto the water to drown.

But if you say "deaths by car traffic", nobody cares. There were almost 4000 roadkills in Germany last year. But so far not a single cardriver has been culled over here.
