View Full Version : Any way to begin a mission in open ocean, instead of way upstream?

Honest, I searched as well as I could before asking, but when I set up my searches, I seem to get either zero hits or about 6 million......
Some of the home ports are wa-a-a-a-a-y up a convoluted narrow passage, and regardless of how many deck watch crew or speed or anything else I can think of, I can't use time compression to get out to sea much faster than just leaving TC=1.
I've tried 4 or five of the ways out of Bergen, and each time, it takes some considerable distance at lawn-chair-and-cigar-with-sunglasses speed to get to where I can open 'er up. Not that many enemy aircraft seem to make incursions into our bases, and damn few battleships try sneaking up the inlets.....
So is there a way I can begin a patrol (in a career) having already gotten out into open sea? As it is, the first thing I do once I make open water is to do a "save game" at that point, naming it "omw AN12" (whatever my patrol zone is) so I have a place to go back to if I get dead soon after I pull away from the coast.
Lorient (or St. Nazaire?) or one of the other French coast bases is nearly as bad. I should probably not be so impatient to take on ships with my faulty torpedoes and crew who can't pull a gun trigger if it's raining outside <sniffle!>
Thanks,

with SH3 commander you have the option to start at sea. Also there is an all weather guns mod which I like to use but not when its very unrealistic to do so.

Andwii,
I've been putting off wiping and re-installing Windoze XP Pro (32) on my "real" machine long enough, until I could make sure I'd properly saved all my SH3 and Eve logs and data. Because of the problems I'd been having, I haven't put in any of the enhancements for SH3 yet except for the 1.4-DVD update.
Time to bite the bullet....err, warhead.....I s'pose, and avail myself of some of the cool add-ons that seemingly everyone else is using.
I'll be interested to see if I can run GWX under one directory, and some of the other acronym-laden versions separately so I can try out different versions.
Good to know there *is* a way to do what I want -- thanks very much for the quick response.
Cheers,

Sorta like I learned in ground school for private pilot: "Take-offs are optional; landings are mandatory."

MultiSH3 will let you run several installations of the game separately from each other, so you can try all the supermods.
