Tomorrow marks the start of the war between the UK and Argentina. Operation Rosario was Argentina's plan to recapture the disputed Falkland's.

I've read that apparently the Argentines arrived thinking that they’d be welcomed, and that Britain would let Argentina take over without a fight. They handed out fliers saying: “People of the Malvinas: You have been liberated from the illegal colonial government. The People and Armed Forces of Argentina embrace you as brothers. JOIN US IN FORGING A GREAT FUTURE FOR THE ISLANDS.”
The common soldiers were under a delusion that the islanders were of Argentine descent struggling under the British yoke. They were somewhat chastened to find them speaking English and practicing English customs.

Think of Mrs Thatcher as some of you will but IMHO she was a bit like Churchill.....the right leader at the right time.

The only problem with that is that she carries responsibility as leader for the military cutbacks the stripping of citizenship the awarding of the contracts to argentina and the row with those contractors...which were all factors in the dictatorship chancing an invasion in the first place.
And if we did not go to war then hundreds of more people would have gone missing in Argentina under the military junta. :hmmm:
The Election war. Started by a failing dictatorship and opposed by one.
Politics aside, major respect to the soldiers and civilians involved, and prayers to those they left behind. There were acts of incredible bravery on both sides.
Here's a little film from a while back:

Regardless....she acted decisively when the occasion warranted it and in so doing ressurected her political popularity at a time when it was at an all time low.
I've often wondered if the British government had an inkling what the Argentinians were planning and chose to let them act first.

Yes, they did (from accounts on Jeremy Vine's show today), how high in or beyond the Foreign Office it went I don't know, but it was definately known by someone in the UK.

1.Good giving the Argies what they deserved.
2.Very bad as it won the evil cow the 1983 general election

IMHO a good thing, she was faced with a tough decision and acted in accordance with the opinion of the British public at the time.
She did what she had to do. No doubt about that.

I'm wondering what Cameron would do should he ever be faced with the same scenario :hmmm:
Given the parlous state of the UK's military, what could he do?

Well thats obvious. He would simply ask around and see if anyone in the country concerned had gone to the right school, then invite them round for a quiet kitchen supper an #10 with fine wine and a nice venison and stilton pie which is quite unlike the taxed pies the plebs eat at greggs.
The solution reached may not be of any benefit whatsoever to either country but the right people would be guaranteed a decent result from whatever deal unfolds:yeah:
Then again maybe I am wrong and he isn't the epitome of a corrupt old school tie bastard.

As far as British public opinion goes. At that time how many Brits apart from those with an interest in naval history could have even told you where the Falklands were?
Even with those who would have known where they were how many would have any knowledge of the long running political disputes over them?
Public opinion is all well and good, but it must be weighed for validity

I don't think there is much he can seen as he as totally dismantled all our armed forces, we don't even have any aircraft carriers :nope:

She must have had one eye on the public outcry and another on her low poll ratings....seized the opportunity and as we all know...the rest is history.

Yes, that is a tricky one but a cuple of SSN's can gain you sea control and an efficient anti-shipping capability.
The present garrison would need to hold out for a week at most until an air bridgehead could be created and reinforcements air lifted in.
Despite my above speculation I'm not convinced the Argentinian military currently have the capability for an invasion....satellite intel would forewarn of any build up of equipment etc. allowing time for adequate countermeasures to be put in place.
All of the above would be Camerons decision of course and with the potential quantities of oil and minerals in the area I suspect he would give the order to fight.

Look at it another way, if Galtieri hadn't invaded or had delayed the invasion Britain would have dismantled her forces under Thatchers plan and not only would you now for a long time been without any carriers, your amphibious force would have been long gone too.

Scary thought there: all that would be left would be the strategic forces.
In 1982 Brittan had an option for conventional response. Post 1982 they would have lost such a response. Now would that have made an invasion more or less likely? Would Argentina risked it if they new that the UK's only response was nuclear? Would they call that bluff so to speak? :hmmm:

Interesting.
It looks like Galtieri deserves a statue in Trafalgar Square for saving the Royal Navy from scrap. And Thatcher deserves a statue in Plaza de Mayo for saving Argentina from dictatorship :hmmm: (!?)

And to add to all the furore HMS Dauntless is now Southbound, but once again it's all routine and would not normally be newsworthy but for the timing. :damn:
