I mean it seems like you can just refit/resupply and head back out and you wil keep getting messages/missions.
So when is the appropriate time to head back to base for a new cut scene or next level or what ever we should call it.

It's good to go back to base to get upgraded equipment, get awarded a newer class boat, and for you to award medals to your crew to raise their ranks and abilities.
Refits will not repair hull damage or destroyed equipment, only your base can repair that and replace dead crew.
I rarely refit at all, and have never refitted twice. Except for heading out of Pearl, I do top off my tanks at Midway on the way to Japanese home waters, and if I am running low on the way back I'll pit stop there again. ( I don't care about the torpedoes, it's a fuel stop only)
There may also be a crew moral factor. Even pirates would port to give their crew shore leave, lol.
I'm goin' down

Return to base at the end of a mission. Your bases is base with the tilted anchor. Other bases are for refueling and rearming.

Keep in mind that in one of those deeply hidden game directories is a blind chimpanzee. He is holding some darts and sometimes faces the wall with the upgrade posters on it.
Only when you end a patrol, they let the chimp toss one of those darts. If it hits the poster for an upgrade you are eligible for, you'll get a pop-up window offering that upgrade. That way you don't end the war in a WWI S Boat without radar, super-fine deck gun, decent sonar or, heaven forbid, one of those snazzy ice cream machines Fluckey's been bragging about.
Your only shot at a possible upgrade (the chimp CAN toss and miss everything you know. Once I tried to bribe him with a banana and he hit me with the next dart....) is to end the patrol at your home port.
So your first objective is to complete the mission to which you were assigned. If you have lots of torps and fuel, you might radio in and get another assignment or two. The then high tail it back to home as quickly as you can, end the cruise and let the chimp do his thing.:D

If you are interested in maximum realism, keep in mind that a fleetboat could carry provisions for 75 days (but seldom stayed out for more than 60 days), and the 'S-boats' something less. The game will let you stay out as long as you want, though. No limitations due to food supplies, or crew fatigue. Alas, the game falls short of perfection. :DL
Also the save files will get longer to load and depending on version and mod you might get reoccuring traffic.
A good compromise is staying on patrol for a month or so which is quite realistic, too.

I usually return to port after most of my torps are expended, and after completing my initial mission. I never radio in to command, otherwise they'll keep sending me on an endless supply of new objectives, regardless of my ammo status. I usually keep 3 torps for my return trip. I've had too many instances of a lone Cruiser, Large Tanker or CV TF crossing my path while having nothing to throw at it.

Something not mentioned yet is the game itself. To make it load faster they divided the campaign into six-month segments. After a certain amount of time you'll suddenly find yourself posting here "How come there aren't any ships anymore?"
It's happened before. :sunny:

I didn't realize there was a danger of the game running past it's script like that. Do the segments start from Dec. 7, '41 and remain 6 mo., or do they start from whenever you leave your base?
