Necro

Start with 4 points.

+1 if you warn about the necro
-1 if you don't.

-2.5 over 3 years
-1.5 over 1 year - 3 years
-1 6 months to a year
-.5 3 -6 months

-2 points if there is a newer applicable thread within the first 3 pages of the forum, regardless of age.

-1 points if the post or thread pertains to topics rendered obsolete and useless. Ie, asking obsolete questions on GWX v1 or SH3 v1.1

-1 point if the topic was already answered in another thread that could be found in a search. You had to search to necro, but chose to bump the one thread that doesn't answer your question?

+1 if the post is on topic.

+2 if the post is improves upon the thread, ie a significant contribution.

-1 if the post offers no significant improvement to the thread. Ie mindless rambling on or off topic.

Bonus points:

+.5 for using a picture to warn of the necro.

+.25 for every post after until the necro is pointed out.

First poster to identify a necro gets 1 point, and another point for correctly scoring it. *Championship to be awarded at a later time.

ANY thread on the first page of a forum is immune to necro status.

Any thread that has been brought back from the dead is called a necro.

Once a thread has been identified as such, and is still pertinent, then it loses the necro status and once again becomes a valid thread.

*Playing devils advocate*

How many points on an infraction to the person who identifies the post as a necro if the perceived offender is new to the community and despite encouragement from Neal to post is unaware of what was posted a year or so before joining the community and or is unaware of how the search function works and or is new to sub simulations?

Then we assign them their score, give them a cookie, a pat on the head, and this link: http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/posting

I'm scoring myself 6.5 points for this one.

On another forum I'm on, There was an old thread about making a pen turning Jig (http://www.penturners.org/forum/f30/segmented-pen-jig-133229/). Somebody asked a "how do I" question at the end of page 1. The top of page 2 had the answer. It was 2 years old. Lately, somebody else commented on the thread, offering up a new revision to the model. A few posts later a new guy answered the question, and then edited to say "oops I was too slow". I lol'd at that.

Ok, I guess I'm going to penalize myself a half point here, not really contributing to the thread.... so 6 points.

^The question begs: can the OP really 'necro his own thread on the 'art of necro' to begin with??.:O: Rather a sort of an inherent 'plank owner' concept imho?

This is one of those threads that always sits in the back of my mind.

There's anther one I wrote for a poker forum that deals with the expected value using the Utility function in playing the lottery. I mainly remember it because I wrote it on a EMS trip from Cleveland to Chicago with a patient on full life support.

There's another great one (infamous really) floating around here somewhere where I believe it was Iambecome and I hashed out the numbers of the torpedos in the game.

And there's the ACTUV post where I broke down the sims values for different systems and strategies. Kinda proud of that one, especially seeing the DoD put our work into use.

And this one is easy to search for. So yeah, I keep tabs on old threads sometimes.
