Okay....been searching for this and can't seem to find a good answer or list...Mostly a SH4 player and finally decided to purchase SH5 (like many, was revolting due to the online requirements.. :DL ) , but I'm having a hard time finding a way to confidently identify "friend or foe" so to speak. This includes a simple list of nations flags and/or a list of who was allied/axis during what years. I've searched not only this forum, but googled the entire internet and either there is not much info or I'm just not using the right keywords. Either way, some help would be appreciated by pointing me in the right direction.

BTW..am using most mods recommended by "Sober" at this time, except IRAI (used up my day's limitation of downloads :)). Generally I play with full realism, but currently have maps contacts on until I'm more confident and familiar with gameplay. My first campaign contact was "green" and assumed it was neutral and left it be. That's what got me searching to begin with. SH4 was pretty much a 'no brainer' when it came to friend or foe, but with SH5, I'm not as sure and therefore, seeking the needed info. Any advice is greatly appreciated!:salute:

Welcome aboard! :salute:

You're right about "green for neutral." Also blue for friend and red for foe. As long as you use map contacts plotted, that's all you need.

Now as for later on, there is a whole flag chart included in TDW's NewUIs for your perusal. It's brought out by clicking the "charts" toggle in the upper right and then clicking and dragging it down from the top left corner.

Let me add my welcome also!

If your are not yet using the excellent MOD, Open Horizon II (and patch), which adds a large dose of realism and immersion then I highly recommend it. Among many other things in the first campaign, Coastal Waters, which covers the period 03SEP39 thru 01JUN40 you will be constantly recieving messages from BDU, U-boat headquarters, advising you who is the enemy and each time that changes. Outstanding!! Wow! Thanks Misha, that's just what I needed. Was not aware of that chart....Pretty nice! :yeah:

However, one question.....The first ship I came accross was Finish and they (according to the chart) were allied later in the war, but axis beginning in around July of 1941. I'm still in 1939, so what do I do, leave neutrals alone or sink them? I'm assuming leave them be, but not sure what is best game wise. :hmmm:

Good question, actually. I'm not sure exactly what the penalty for sinking neutrals is, all I know is that sinking friendlies is a very, very bad thing. :D

Also, when Poland surrenders, do not shoot at them no matter what color they have, as it has been known to make the game crash.

Using open horizons 2. Today I sank a Finnish merchant, it was in the baltic operations mission. The date was 9/9/1939. It was scored as sinking an enemy vessel. Is this right?:hmmm: If not why was it scored as a victory. Also, I would like to know if OH2 penalizes you for sinking vessels that are not enemy.

from the date he reported, I am sure that Stoli got a renown penalty for sinking the Finnish merchant. Nonetheless, if he did it a week later, he could have done it free of penalty.

This is the reason: when I deviced the core of OH's DefSides.cfg, I added several "free" navies and merchant fleets. Likewise Free France, they got a different diplomatic posture than the one officially assumed by their country. In our case, an allied "FreeFinland" faction is set from 16 Sept 1939 (when the Finnish steam merchant 'Suomen Poika', carrying contraband to Britain, was captured by U-41) to 24 Jun 1940 (when Finland becomes a cobelligerent of Germany):

After this episode [ Suomen Poika's capture] and before Nazi Germany and Finland became allied, the Finnish merchant fleet suffered 16 losses due to ships seized or sunk by German U-boats

Within the above timeframe, any ship sailing under the Finnish flag can be either Finnish (thus a neutral ship) or FreeFinnish (thus an enemy smuggling ship). :know:

Icelander ships are valid targets from 10 May 1940 (when the British occupied it) to the end of the war. Short historical background:

British forces invade neutral Iceland without meeting any resistence by local armed forces. Although it cooperated with the British and then the Americans by providing important air bases and naval facilities to the Allies, Iceland officially remained neutral throughout World War II. Between Mar. '41 and Feb.'45 its merchant and fishing fleets suffered 8 casualtie and 1 damaged ship during due to engagements with German U-boats

Nonetheless, if he did it a week later, he could have done it free of penalty.: So would I notice the penalty after the patrol? When I sank the vessel it completed the "patrol the designated area" mission. Also, the area where she went to the bottom is marked with a RED ship sunk icon on the nav map.

Are you using New UI's? Normally it CTD's the game when a friendly ship is sunk by the player (not sure about neutral ships but your experience coul prove that they can be sunk).

CTD's apart, afaik neutral ships count for tonnage requirement, but sinking them is sanctioned with a renown points reduction. Renown points are the ones used for getting new equipment and better torpedoes :yep:

Dunno. The only thing I can say is that going by DefSide.cfg settings (see Trevally's post below) I am pretty sure that the ship sunk by Stoli151 was neutral, unless he confused nationality/date indeed... :hmm2:

The date was indeed 9/9/1939. The blue cross on white backround of Finland's flag is quite unmistakable for any other flag that I am aware of in this game. I did get a very good view of it. I was not sure I should sink it but it had been one of those very boring patrols to that point and I sank it out of boredom.(Something that I hope a real commander would not do.)Here is the list of my currently activated mods in order, in case of possible conflict. I am not new to the SH series but I am new to SH5. So please let me know of any order errors or anything else I could do better. Whether or not the error would cause the situation discussed.

A good rule would be: if they are heading for England, they carry cargo on deck, and they are not sailing under an allied flag, sink them without a second thought. Who knows if Trevally has set valid targets this way, when he designed OH's merchant traffic? :hmm2:

You shouldn't use IRAI_0_0_39_Inertia_Damage without Ship's Inertia mod. Other than this, your mod loadout looks okay to me. :up:

The Vigilante was the fastest plane to take off and land on aircraft carriers ... I think she did 2.2 mach without the electronics pod they called a canoe.

Sadly she was the most shot down Navy plane of the Vietnam war with 23 lost to combat. She was no longer needed for delivering a nuclear weapon after the polaris boats came into service.

I would leave Finnish ships alone becouse they were sort of defacto allies of Germany during 1939 due to the fact that they were having a nasty little war with the Soviets at that time. Germany was actually supplying them with some war material. Wait to sink them until after 1944 when they switched sides.
