A Japanese fishing vessel swept away by the March 2011 tsunami has been spotted adrift off the west coast of Canada. An aircraft patrolling the seas off British Columbia saw the 15m (50ft) vessel seen floating 275km (170 miles) from the Haida Gwaii islands on Friday.

I'm politically incorrect. I still call the Haida Gwaii the Queen Charlotte Islands. :O:

I don't know...could be a sneak attack by N. Korea.
Obviously a lot of the debris from the Japan Tsunami aren't more than mangled wreckage but I wonder why an effort isn't being made to recover things like this.

It looks like some painting and scraping and maybe some minor repairs would be all that's needed to put this fishing boat back into service. I'd expect the owners would want it back if they could and here it floats for an entire year unattended.

Except for a years worth of corrosion on the hull and upper decks the ship doesn't look like there is much wrong with it. It must be battened down and water tight or i'd think a years worth of rain and waves would have sunk her by now.
How much would an equipped 50' fishing trawler be worth?

No-one is believed to be on board the ship, registered in Hokkaido, Japan

I believe this is the HMCS Rustybucket one of our latest destroyer frigates out on sea trials. It was purchased from the Royal Navy at a bargain price and no warranty. :O:
We have all been well and truly cheated. This ship is not Japanese, but a top modern surveillance ship from North Korea. They sent it to the eastern Atlantic in order to spy on Americans.
Who would suspect an old rusty fishing trawler

Update to the story:
Apparently the USCG is going to sink the ship.

I'm just wondering why. I know the owner doesn't want it back but I don't understand why someone isn't claiming it as salvage. The hull alone has to be worth the cost of towing it to port. The electronics and other fittings ought to be worth something too.

Someone will make the governemnt tow it into port, pump out the bilges, discharge the fuel and other eco-unfriendly contaminates at the tax payer expense. Then another will come along and claim it.

Looks like they're already firing on it.
