Back to Scapa 22/03/2012
I sank some british ships of the eastern british waters and had a reasonably good patrol . On the way back to Willhelmshaven i decided to accept a mission to raid scapa flow . I am heading back to refuel and i am out of torpedoes . My hull has been damaged and at around 79% effective . I dont have time to drydock because i have to be at scapa by the 15th of october and it is the 2nd already . Unfortunately heavy fog has set in and the navigator has us slightly lost (using real navigation) . He cannot do a celestial reckoning and can only do dead reckoning . Unfortunately the more times in a row he does the dead reckoning without celestial the more lost we get . heavy fog for 2 days and i have been trying to find Helgoland port for 12 hours now , going around in circles .

Because there are so many enemy at scapa you have to enter at night and preferably with no moon and medium fog . You cannot go periscope depth because of mines and sub nets . Thanks for nothin Trevally for making it realistic :O: I had medium fog entering scapa but unfortunately half way thru the fog lifted and the full moon came up . It was like half daylight and its a new career again for me .

Funny you should mention rocky outcrops . If someone could make a GR2 rocky outcrop with TDW editor and make it collisionable and viewable from below and above the water . I could place them strategically around the place . If it was made from an existing ship that had the avoidance so that other ships would avoid it .

You really don't need to quote the entire picture just to make a comment, especially when yours is the very next post. :sunny:

That is an awesome "plan" map .... very, Very funny ...
I saved it in my docs for future laughs .... it's one of those funny things that just gets funnier the more you look at it! ...
I am a little nervous to go in now! ... cause, .. well, ... ya know, ... it being my very first time in Scapa and all ....
Trevally: :haha::har:
I just came back from Scapa. My realism setup is rather arcade, well I don't use manual targeting, I do have map contact update and I don't use event camera. All this switched to off makes 69% realism. I just want to enjoy the campaign, sinkings, views and immersion.
Anyway as I was approaching I was expecting sub nets and mines however I've encountered subnets only. Are there any specific places where mines were set (I do know it is a part of OH) ?
Secondly I've experienced two ctd's when I tried to attack destroyer. It was bit foggy, other destroyers were far away so I've decided to get rid of this one which was somehow around me all the time. When the torpedo was on its half way (approximately) the game just crashed. Tried second time with same result. Finally I did not attack and made my way in - no crash as well as no crash when I hit the warship (capital ship). I read something about ctd's around Scapa already so I'm gonna doublecheck that.
Apart from this everything's working fine, thanks Trevally for suggestions yesterday, I must have screwed up something and I think I already know what it was. I did everything right, but then I stupidly loaded the savegame after tutorial instead of starting new career and skipping the tut. Now I'm finally enjoying Open Horizons and what a piece of work again. You know before I actually didn't even have the buoys in the game so no wonder that the campaign went wrong as well, it was totally screwed. Now everything seems to be all right, Graf Zeppelin (is it) at Kiel in the beginning of the war, Baltic mission (didn't have that at all before) and the entire traffic is completely overhauled I can see that. Hunting ships is much more entertaining now, but still not the easiest thing in the world. On my way back from Scapa I found my first convoy which I couldn't find any before.
Thanks a lot, all of you.

There are mines all over Scapa but mostly at the entrances. They are below the surface so as to not effect surface ships.

Yes - this is an issue around scapa for both stock campaigns and OHII.
So far the only fix is to switch to your map view before the torps hit
