Hi everybody

Yes I just bought it and my first comment is, wow this sure isn't Silent Hunter III. Meaning the former is one special game. The graphics are nice but what a friggin head ache trying to figure out how to get a nice external camera view, get the periscope down, turn more than 5', figure out the map....where's the zoom? Not even a book with the disk I bought, is there a manual somewhere? After an hour I had to pop two tylonol extra strength. I think I got so side tracked that I took four. Going back and taking two more forgetting I had just taken two. Getting old.

Well after infusing the body with another pale of coffee the head feels much better. People who drink coffee will understand that one. I'm starting to get it that this is a different sort of sim than Silent Hunter III where you're in control of everything first hand. You should have seen me trying to climb up my ladder the first time. I looked over at Butt-Head my dog and swore a blue streak. He looked up..... Milk Bone time?? I can see things will work out slow but sure.

:haha:

I can see that you have an excellent sense of humor! Welcome aboard, Herr Kaleun! :salute:

You CAN be in first hand charge in SH5 too, but it will require some modding. And, for the record, as much as I love wandering around the sub and having a real live crew aboard, I'm an immersion freak, I too have my issues here and there, such as getting from the bridge to the control room. "Climb down first ladder until downward movement ceases, raise point of view, back off, lower point of view again, press forward to go down second ladder."

I'm not saying I could have done any better myself with the coding, I know that I couldn't have, but that has made me a big fan of "teleporting" (another mod) when I'm going down below, even though I insist on walking manually in all other situations. :DL

Anyway, the modding bit is a bit daunting but, seeing as how you're a fellow SHIII "vet", I'm sure you're familiar with that. I can't do justice to all of the mods in anything less than 50 pages and I don't much like to be the cause of further headaches on your end, so a good place to start is this thread (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=190656).

On the other hand, if you just want to jump into an "all-in-one supermod", from what I understand this one is the one to try out (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=192236). It is, from what I've learned, quite stable, well put together, but it will require quite a bit of perusing "readme" files to find out what all of the mods included in it do. Then again, that's true no matter what mods you pick.

Finally, again because you're like me and an SHIII vet, I personally recommend as an absolute "must have", TDW's NewUIs (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=166093). It does everything but make your coffee in the morning, but the main thing to an SHIII vet, at least that's my opinion, it allows you to change the user interface to whichever model you're used to. The "downside" is that it covers almost everything, so to tailor it exactly to your needs requires a bit of work. On the other hand, the settings that it defaults to when enabled has all of the functionality and buttons from SHIII while including the new features of SH5. You can always fine tune it later. That one is, by the way, part of pedrobas' awesome supermod linked to above.

Speaking of which, with that supermod you get the added advantage of pedrobas spending God knows how many hours tweaking about four dozen different mods to the point where they all play well together. I am in complete awe of that, knowing a thing or two about how long it took me to make my manually stitched together mod soup to work properly. In awe of that as well as the thousands of hours of work that all of the modders put into the individual mods making up the whole package. His mod is next on my list, that's for sure

But, regardless, these are just my opinions. As I'm sure you already know, if you need any additional help and advice, you have the friendliest, most helpful community at your fingertips and I am proud to be a part, however insignificant, of it.

Hey I'm glad I could entertain you misha with my frustrations LOL. Things are getting brighter though. The fog is lifting. I'll check those mods out tomorrow. Thanks :salute:

Things are progressing. I'm turning, diving, launching eels and sinking....Them not me. As long as I keep the coffee I.V. going the head aches stay away. One of the things I miss terribly is my "< >" views why they were not included in this sim is beyond me. Is there a way to view these type of shots or is there a patch perhaps ? I'd like to say thank you to the mod people and their great work especially GWX on Silent Hunter III and Sober on Silent Hunter V

get TDW's NewUIs, external views are easy. And you can have your old SH3 (or SH4, or SH5 enhanced) interface back. Just be sure to read ALL the documentation inside ALL the nested folders.

That works great... Thanks Mysenses.

OH...I know what it is now about Silent Hunter 5 that has been gnawing at me. As I looked at the U Boat go by something didn't look right. I went back to Silent Hunter III and picked up on it right away. There's no physics in the movement of the boat at all. Isn't this correct? It moves moves through the water almost totally flat like a hand held game. Right? When you get in any kind of weather with Silent Hunter III you're on a roller coaster especially a storm. Is this right or is something wrong?
