View Full Version : Resetting hull integrity in the middle of a patrol?

Hi Kaleuns,

Once again, I must call upon your help (I feel like I'm beginning to spam by asking all of these questions, but the search isn't always helpful).

I just got back into port the other day and discovered my HI was 40%. This was a bit of a shock as I didn't really give aircraft much of a chance to attack my boat. As far as I could tell, the DC's exploded far away. On another patrol when I was, well, bolder, and remained surfaced to attack, I returned with 95% HI.

However, I'm thinking I lost a bunch of HI points when I spawned in after a loading a save. As soon as the loading was finished, my boat was already rocking such that if I was standing perfectly vertical, my nose would be touching the deck! Glass was breaking, and the lights went out. It was as if I had spawned some meters in the air, and was simply dropped into the sea, bending my boat, and depleting HI.

So, if something like this happens, I don't want that to kill me right there, or reduce the chance of survival when I do encounter an escort.

Now to the point: Is there a way to check and reset HI in the middle of a patrol? How do I avoid the spawn bug?

Thanks, and as always, happy hunting.

If you took damage and save you'll see the breaking glass sequence after reloading to remind you of your damage.
That's no bug.

By default (Stock SH3) the HI indicator is visible at the crew screen showing your HI in percent any time. There are several different mods that hide this info. If you run SH3 Commander you should be able to check a box for toggling this feature on/off. You can't reset the hull damage in the middle of a patrol. You would have to dock in a friendly port or at a milk cow.

Then I guess those bombs were closer than I thought... :hmmm:

Thanks!

With some things, Silent Hunter is a game of extremes and hull integrity is one of them(map contacts on/off is another but I won't get into that).

With HI indicator turned on, it gives you an exact reading of how badly damaged your hull is. There was no gauge like that inany submarine,

With the HI indicator turned off with SH3Commander, now you have no idea how badly damaged your hull is, when any Chief Engineer can at least give his captain an idea how badly damaged his sub is.

There really isn't any middle ground except that an awesome modder named h.sie made a mod called "Colored Hull Integrity Indicator" that changes the percentage into one of four colors depending how badly you're damaged. Now there is at least a little mystery, but you at least have an idea of how you stand in the integrity department without knowing the exact percentage.

Yup, I know about that one :) I just have to get into port again, lol. Thanks for the tip.

EDIT - just installed it.

I read my hull integrity in percentage points in SH3 Commander ... when it reaches below 75% I know I need to rectify or return to port as an engagement can be treacherous starting with that much damage to my hull (immerision pucker factor). A deep dive could implode my boat ... when 100% could meet max depth design specs. (immerision pucker factor).

If I can get to a milch cow I have found when reloading the sim, my hull has been repaired to 100% again as well as fuel, eels, and candy for the crew.

And that's one of the problems with the game. A milk cow should give you enough fuel to get home, two torpedoes for protection while getting there and should make no repairs you can't make yourself. A surface supply ship should be able to do a little more, but not much.

Using h.sies exe fix and Steiblers addon I get 4 torps max and a % of fuel from a milch though still does repair damage

any idea if milk cows carried some equipment on board to repair minor things (like messed up parts that just need replaced)? I was just wondering that if lets say a depth charged screwed up the stern propellor or something they would have a few spares to throw on.

In real life a sub tender (USN) would effect machine shop type repairs. The milch cow as Sailor Steve remarked typically was for restocking although temp repairs made on the sub by milch cow crew may be enhanced by their additional quals to effect permenant repair (in my immersion dreams). I speak to light repair items U488 helps me with. I had a picture frame with Helga's picture repaired by them :har:
