I know the AI subs do but what about surface vessels?

I've yet to see one launch a torpedo... :hmmm:

So far i havent see one do it even though i know that some DD and Frigate could do it in real life in WW2

I am confident that AI ships have them, but ASW doctrine will not let the AI use them on subs. Unlike modern torpedoes with their spiffy tracking packages, the surface launched torpedo was not effective against submarines. Ideally, the surface ship would need the exact depth of the sub and be running parallel en passant to the sub for an ideal solution. All the sub has to do is react to a stray torpedo it knows it did not fire. Diving below 25m/100 feet was sufficient in most cases. The only real use a torpedo fired at a sub would have is to force the sub to react. A sub on the defensive has lost all its initiative and the sub's attack is foiled unless it can regain initiative. No one really plays Destroyer Command anymore (I just got it BTW), but that game shows much more effectively the mission for surface torpedoes; ruining the day for capital ships, whose guns will shred destroyers.

actually during operation weseteubung or however you spell it , I was following 1 of the german battleship task force wth scharnhorst and gnieseneau going up in norwegian coast and ran into a group of british destroyers which were totally out numbered all of them had torpedo tubes and battled it out with deck guns and I would think that this would be the perfect situation for the destroyers to have used torpedoes against the battleships but they did not, so I am quite sure that the answer is no, ai ships don't use their torps its for show.

I'm assuming it's something that could easily be modded since the AI subs launch torpedos in SH5... :hmmm:
