View Full Version : SH3 advice: Gibraltar by daylight

Hello,

I'm doing the single mission Gibraltar now. Almost in Grid CG96.
The problem is: it's sunrise, patrols all over the place and submerged (150m) with lowering CO2 en 50% batt. I think this is hopeless... or is there a tactic for a happy end..?

Thnx for reading this transmission (now they know for sure that I'm down there somewhere...;-))

Reverse course , out of sight of patrol's , surface , recharge batteries and oxygen , wait for bad weather if possible , proceed surfaced in the dead of night , dive only when imminent danger . Best of Luck and Good hunting !

Get as far through on the surface as you can, and when you dive hug the African coast. That's all I can say. :salute:

Thnx. I think they sent the whole fleet to hunt me. I sunk one of them earlier on. Bad tactic of me I guess. That made me the hunted.

You are now the Hunted , dive deep , silent running , if one Destroyer , use the hydrophone to determine it's run then full flank speed when you hear the depth charges dropping , count the splash's , second to last drop , drop to slow or play dead by full stop , repeat procedure , if two destroyers play dead , one will be listening to you while the other makes it's run . Best of Luck . You are about to experience the Pucker Factor !

Yep... I'm afraid so. Isn't there a "The Enemy Below" mod? Hunted by only one destroyer ? :timeout:

That's one of the problems. Deck gun is damaged. So plenty of reasons to surface for a longer period...:arrgh!:

As for advice, I'd say that this is suicide, but I wouldn't say impossible.

You can try the "are you mad" trick and go in flak speed surfaced or the sneaky sneaky submerged trick. Or better yet turn around while you still can, damage your boat on the way home and tell Deonitz that you tried but sustained heavy damage and could continue.

But I really think you should try, I'm itching to hear your story and I hope you make it out alive.

Good Hunting :salute:

Advice: like someone mentioned earlier, surface some where safe to recharge and stuff. Once that's done, go out further into the ocean to test how far and how long you can stay submerged. It's a good idea to know the limits of your boat before attempting something as daring as this. Once you know these two factors then you are ready to go. Use your new data to measure the farthest point to submerge and farthest point to surface. Staying submerged is your safest bet. You can use you sonar to track any income patrols and know where to turn or when to stop or when you think it's safe to go at a higher speed under water. I recommend that you stay on silent run for the duration you are underwater. I did this once, but that was up at Dover Strait earlier in the war. Gibgraltar is very different but the same tactics should work, with some luck of course.

So I say all the best to you Kaleun :salute:

You got a point here... I think the only difference between a German WW2
U Boat and a Bird of Prey is the cloacking device and propulsion... ;-)
Some Klingon music parts sound the same as of Das Boot (the Gibraltar scene).

I think that my big mistake was that I attacked (and sunk) one of them before entering the strait of Gibr. Now I have 7 ships above me (at 150m) waiting .. close to Africa..

Depth charges: I want to release some oil and put some clothes in the tubes... is that possible in this game?

At some point you can release purpose built decoys which give off bubbles which can confuse the escort sonar operators.

The whole jettisoning debris tactic is probably a Hollywood invention. A few scraps of debris would do nothing to get the escorts off your back. The escort Captain would believe that he has damaged you, not killed you. Signs that a U-boat may be destroyed besides the obvious noises associated with a sub's hull collapsing were large air bubbles and large volumes of oil. This could not be replicated with a few scraps of debris.

Boompus, once a destroyer is aware of your presence it can call in a bunch of warships from the immediate vicinity.

I played a Gibraltar mission in which I had maybe 14 ships over my head. I got away after some careful evasive maneuvers (flank speed and turning when the destroyer is overhead) and then silent running at 50 rpms to creep away.

It took hours, but I got away and the destroyers eventually dispersed. I checked the outside camera (this was a single-mission) and I saw a bunch of star-shells all over the place, but not where I was.

I think there were so many that they had to worry more about bumping into each other than getting a shot at me :arrgh!:

ive gotten through gibralta before, just keep your distance from the destroyers and weave around them, use flank when possible to move the ball down field, stay close to africa, but remain in deep water, and then slip around to ceuta and hide, once your through. You can recharge when stationary btw (perhaps a bug, I asked whether this was the case in reality on this forum in a past post) just go all stop and use compression and wahch you battery recahrge:woot:

its alot of fun down there, my favorite place in the game. good luck!

Gibraltar isn't that bad. It was the first mission I finished in SH3 when I bought it back in 2010. Day or night doesn't matter much. All one has to do is plot a course along the African coast, go as deep as you are able and go silent. It takes several hours and you will deplete a bunch of your air, but it is manageable. I would not want to try Gibraltar on the surface at all. Radar ignores fog and darkness.:ping:
