Have you had any lag with other pages today? I get lag out here pretty bad sometimes, and I think it has to do with our ISP. It's a possibility anyway.

Okay, while waiting for everything to upload to the new server, for those of you who the site will NOT load, what Operating System are you using? I very highly doubt that it has anything to do with it, but it could be vital information.

Is that COMCAST's DNS server not resolving addresses? - change DNS server to Google's and should be ok. You'll have to Google how to as I can't remember off the top of my head as I've only done it once before.

Or you could complain to COMCAST but if your ISP is like the ISPs here you'll be quicker actually walking to Cavalla.

Chad
03-03-12, 09:10 PM
For those who are unable to check out the site at http://cavalla.site11.com/ please try this site hosted on an entirely new server (albeit same host): http://chadmcrae.site90.com

If you can reach this site, it is not the full site, just a testbed to see if Comcast users can connect to it.

Chad
03-03-12, 09:11 PM
@Herr-Berbunch: Are you recommending this for me or for the others? I'm afraid if I redirect the sites DNS to Google's, then when they visit the site they will be redirected straight to Google.

No, it resolves the name to an IP. It looks like something in the network is dropping it.

I'm curious as to the cause of the problem.

Chad
03-04-12, 08:16 PM
I'm curious as to the cause of the problem.

Well simply a terrible mixture of a lot of different code that wasn't finished.

The website, while being built for the Cavalla, is also being entered into a national contest of other teams developing websites for other, non-profit organizations. I have been in contact with Neal off and on since August working on developing the sound from almost ground up and the contest end-date is March 9th. March 10th we cannot touch the site until the judges finish judging, and we find out how it goes during the AITP contest at the end of March.

Part of the problem was MY host, 000webhost.com. When I first heard about the contest, I immediately registered an account, and had the account waiting. While we didn't start develop immediately, the host, and my webspace, just sat and decayed in age as numerous updates were available that I neglected to install at first development.

The site runs very heavily on the database portion, and it would have helped that when we began developing for the site, if I had updated the mySQL Databases we had. There were 3 security updates that I had neglected, and upon last week, hadn't installed. We built the site around the standards of the previous installed version of the database.

With the current fixes, as I also should have seen, is we're really getting ourselves in trouble with our web host, and have since contacted one of my professors about being hosted on a different server entirely. I wanted to avoid this, but it looks like their is no alternative. We get nearly unlimited bandwidth, and several TBs of storage, and with how much information is actually on the site, it's needed, especially for future releases of media we have planned

That explains the page not found - but it doesn't explain why your server failed to answer a ping - unless you have it stealthed. Did you kill ICMP traffic or something in addition?

No stealthing IP here, and I don't even know what ICMP stands for. I honestly don't have a reason for why the site is unable to be ping-able. Perhaps the server has a virtual Alberich coating.

Comcast user here, no go. :06:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

What you can try:

Diagnose Connection Problems

This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including:

Internet connectivity has been lost.
The website is temporarily unavailable.
The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable.
The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's domain.
There might be a typing error in the address.
If this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click Tools, click Internet Options, click Advanced, and check to be sure the SSL and TLS protocols are enabled under the security section.

I emailed you the BC server info. Maybe that will work.

Chad
03-05-12, 07:08 PM
Try using this address with the www. www.cavalla.site11.com

I cannot change the DNS information because 1, I don't own a domain, and 2 I'm using a free hosting service.

I got your email Neal, I'll need call their IT dept and ask them to set up a mySQL database for me. Shouldn't be a problem, just I don't have the options with a FTP login.

I'm also working with my school to mirror the site on one of their servers. We will get this thing going one way or another

Same result. No response from the server.

I cannot change the DNS information because 1, I don't own a domain, and 2 I'm using a free hosting service.
I don't think it's a DNS issue. The hostname is resolving to an IP. (Can someone outside of Comcast verify what IP address it resolves to?)

CaptainHaplo
03-05-12, 07:23 PM
www.cavalla.site11.com (http://www.cavalla.site11.com) translates to 31.170.161.136.

I am not comcast, fyi.

What it looks like is that comcast users are blocked getting to that IP - likely site11.com has been blacklisted by the ISP would be my first guess.

To check - any Comcast users - please try going directly to www.site11.com (http://www.site11.com) and see if you can get there. If you cannot - then the hosting IP (all the IP's that DNS sees with that name) are going to be blocked. If that is the case, the fix is contact the ISP and have that one IP removed from the blacklist....

But your talking about a battle - not likely to be done in a few days..

CaptainHaplo, I'm using your idea of masking the .site11.com domain and seeing if that allows the Comcast users to peek behind whatever block Comcast may have on site11
No go.

It's still going to be sending data to/from the same location. The internet really doesn't care about domain names, it's really only deals with IP addresses. Since the server is at the same IP address, it's still getting dropped by Comcast. (But yes, I did test it. Same "server not responding" type message.)

CaptainHaplo
03-05-12, 07:59 PM
Ok we are getting closer to a confirmation....

Someone on Comcast try to go there:

31.170.160.104 (file://\\31.170.160.104)

If you get a 000webhost.com free web hosting page - let me know. I suspect your going to get the timeout/page not found. Please confirm either way.

CaptainHaplo
03-05-12, 08:04 PM
For those that want an explanation - here is what it looks like.

The data resides on the server at 31.170.160.104 - the website DNS goes to 31.170.160.136 - which is a "redirector' that forwards to the server.

I failed to check the www.site11.com (http://www.site11.com) IP - that starts with 200.x.x.x - meaning its a totally different range and wouldn't be blocked by comcast like the 31.170.160 subnet is.

A "server" side problem can be ruled out because people outside the comcast network can get the data fine. If it was server side, no one could get data, it wouldnt be limited to one ISP that couldnt.

Thanks Razark! Ok that suprises me - I figured Comcast would blacklist a range of IP's - assuming the webhost has servers in a nice, neat IP range.

Its likely that someone, somewhere, at some time on that server - did something that got the IP blacklisted. Best bet is to call comcast in the AM and ask if that IP is on their blacklist, and what it will take to get it removed. Will likely be something the webhost company has to do - but you can try and at least confirm its on the blacklist.

razark
03-05-12, 09:22 PM

Yup, seems the likely case here. Seen it happen often enough at the hosting company. New customer gets an IP, finds out it's been blocked by ISPs all over the place, has to deal with cleaning up the hassle of what some other moron was doing.

It's free web hosting.

Try this:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/firebug/

Use it to look at it. Many errors, most waiting for stats and ads, makes page load times inconsistent.

Using Chrome and it works OK. I get this link when I try to creat a new account: http://csmwsu.org/?q=user/register Which is less than obvious about how to actually create an account.

There's also a spelling error here: http://csmwsu.org/cavalla/?q=crew

Pleas have a look around!!! Should read: Please have a look around!!!

Other than that good effort Chad. Well done.

Thanks for the further testing. The project is now in the hands of the judges. I know there are numerous spelling mistakes, that would be my other teammates :haha: Half the battle is dealing with the spelling mistakes of a team member who has the literacy of a 3rd grader. That aside, he is very logic-minded and can program anything!
