I'm seriously considering comming back to SH4 for a while due to the state of SH5...

Don't get me wrong the mods are improving SH5 nicely but there still are some serious game design flaws/ommisions. I really miss my repair crews and crew management in particular from SH4 as well as the ability to change subs as the war progresses... The crew from SH5 is totally sub standard as you can't get them to go into the next compartment as a repair team and the ability to walk the sub is ruined when your flooding in every compartment and observe your cook dutifully preparing a meal and sailors reading in their bunks!

It seems with TMO and RSRD SH4 is finally the Pacific Sub sim I dreamed of.

Is it worth my installing and getting back into SH4 or will I be spoiled after SH5 pretty graphics?

How do you all compare SH4 to SH5 with Mods added?

Thanks!

5 certainly has great graphics but TMO 2.5 looks very good as well.

As far as I'm concerned great graphics are second to good game play and 4 seems far superior in that respect. I think the PTO is much more interesting than the ATO anyway.

Walking the boat looses it's appeal very fast, than it becomes more of a pain.

I was never convinced with SH5 from the outset! If there is an edge to be had, I'll give it to the ocean/foam graphics of SH5. But it's a slight edge mind you! With the environment mods available for SH4, it's a very close heat IMO. Besides the foam, there's nothing about the game that thrills me to purchase it:nope:

I think the whole working the interior of the boat thing is for those who are after that type of imersion. I just fired up IV after not playing for almost a year, the V fiasco burned me out. But it's destiny is up to those who want to play and improve it. Told myself once you could play V off line I'd take a look, still might but the burn out changed my mind, maybe. Hey if Brett Farve can change his mind.. Anyway I miss open hatch from III but I settle for external view and ash can rain. And so according to the TMO documentation, I'm a 'cheater'. I'll live.

Well, that depends on what external cam and how you use it. There's a reason why the Next/previous unit cam is disabled by default in TMO, while the normal external camera isn't. My issue with the unit cam, is if you have any type of contact with something; particuarly radar, or sonar, you can, without ever surfacing or popping the periscope:

- Identify what type of ship the contact is
- what is around that contact. Is it alone? Is it escorted? What the composition is of a convoy.
- see what its armed with, or what equipment it has
- If it's damaged or not
- If its sinking or not
- If its underway or stationary.

And you can gleam all this very useful info that effects what decisions you make, MILES away, without any extra effort on your part other then having it on radar or sonar. No chasing down, no interception, no risk, hell you don't even have to surface. That's why i call it a cheat cam. :salute:

Ducimus; more than fair of you to explain that, and I appriciate it.
Please don't feel offended by my sometimes sarcastic view of how I flavor the game. I also use the cam to watch fish slam into my target, because I like that. I don't like the event view. Also enjoy a close up view of the overhead dd violently droping cans on my sub. In fact at times I will not run silent, so I can reload, become detected, attack and do it again.
I've wiped out a few convoys that way. I've also lost a few subs that way. That's how I have some fun with it, no big deal it's just a game.

edit; btw thank you for the work on the doc, saved me alot of searching.
