Hi

I had been running SH4, v1.3 that I got from steam a few weeks back. That was going fine, although there were quite a few CTD's. The other day I decided to upgrade and get the 1.5 version in u-boat missions, so I could get some mods going.

I paid for and down loaded the new version, again via steam. The problem now is now it CTD everytime I leave the office. Tried it several time and it crashes before even going to the sub. (hope that makes sence)

Completely and totally unplayable and extremely frustrating.:damn:

I am contacting steam, but was wondering in the mean time if anyone else was had this happen and if there is an easy fix.

Thanks

Maybe try downloading it again and do a fresh install.

After deleting the SH4 folders under My Documents, try reinstalling the game in a new directory, NOT one under the Program Files directory. Make a new Windows directory (I used GAMES): C://Windows/Games/ubisoft/SH4

That will solve 90 % of the CTD problems on new installs.

Not possible to swap install folders under a Steam install as far as I am aware, though wiping the folders in 'My Documents' is always a good idea when reinstalling.

@ OP - did you mod the game before installing the Uboat addon pack? I take it you bought the addon from Steam as well?

Probably the best thing to do is to find both SH4 & the Uboat pack in your Steam library, then r-click each one and 'delete local content'. This will wipe any stock game files. If you have installed any mods, you'll need to go into your SH4 folder and manually delete those files (and JSGME if it's installed in that folder). This should ensure you have no files left on your system.

Once that's done, reinstall SH4 first. Wait for it to download, then start it up just once (don't do any missions, just load to menu, accept any patch downloads on the way & then quit). This ensures the correct paths are written to the registry.

Then download the Uboat mission pack, start that once as well. This should give you a working stock verson of SH4 with the Uboat missions. Try it unmodded first to make sure it's all working and stable (there are still a few issues with stock game even after uboat patch, but greatly reduced), have a few patrols. If it's all working, you should be good to install mods etc when you see fit.

I use Steam versions of SH4 & Uboat missions, and the above worked for me. Hope it helps!:salute:

Hey thanks for the help guys. Tried everything mentioned and still no luck.

I'm now trying what the steam help people are suggesting but that is not working either.

It appears to me something wrong with what's being downloaded. After validating the cache file there are 434 errors which is really astounding. I know my PC can run this game so the problem is not there.

I'm very close to giving up and never using steam again for anything.
