I bough the book, Das Boot last week and I just finished reading it. It is one of the best books I have ever read. As much as I loved the movie, the book is almost a completely different story. I found out just how much the movie could not put in because of the sheer volume of detail. I was also surprised by a lot of key differences, such as what the movie added, composite characters and omissions. This is a definite must-read for anyone. Great novel!:yeah:

I should read the book, seeing as I've watched the uncut mini-series version about a bajillion times.
What has put me off from reading it has been a bit of a "personal grudge" with what the author said about the film. :shifty:

Both the movie and the book are excellent. However, comparing the two together is comparing apples to oranges. I could really go into details, but I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't read the book.

What he said was based on the changes the moviemakers made to his "baby". No author likes to see his book changed. Also don't forget that more than one real u-boatman said some pretty bad things about the book.
The book is fiction, based on real experiences, and should be taken as such. The movie is fiction, based on a fictional book which was based on real experiences. Both are excellent, but shouldn't be taken as history.
Do yourself a favor and read the book. It won't make you hate the movie. Just the opposite, it will make you appreciate it even more. You'll also be amazed at how much of the book is in the film.

Speaking of Das Boot, has anybody read Jordan Vause's book "Wolf"? He has a whole chapter on Das Boot and how it is viewed in the U-boat community.

Personally, I prefer Buchheim: U-Boat War.

I do understand the authors objections to the changes, but I get the same feeling every single time I read about some author whining how the film version was completely different from the book. It shouldn't be a surprise to an author that books are almost impossible to completely translate on film. If you don't want anything changed, don't sell the rights.
I'm sure I'd appreciate the book like I did the film, but the film is still the Das Boot for me. It's the Das Boot I saw when I was a kid, it's the Das Boot I've seen many times after that. Even though the book came first, the film will always be the definitive version to me. :O:
Still, I'm gonna read the damn thing some day, after I've destroyed the current queue of books I have waiting for reading.

I was very cautious in my feelings when I picked up the book. Trust me, you'll be amazed.

The movie (original and uncut) is excellent. The book is better than the movie. Read the book. Trust me. I do not want to give out spoilers, but to help convince you, the bar scene at the beginning of the movie is an ice cream social compared to what occurred in the book. :D

Damn yous.. I caved under the pressure and went to the library yesterday. :haha: 50 pages in and I almost couldn't put the book down!
Good book, but I never had any doubts about that, just the author.

What I find interesting about the book is how the author can describe mind-numbing boredom but not in a mind-numbing boring way.
There are large parts of his book where nothing is happening... but you are still interested as a reader. That is a rare quality in a writer.
