Hi,

I recently purchased SH3 to try it out. I liked it, so I bought SH5. I started playing SH5 on 100% realism. First thing I noticed is that on 100% realism, contacts do not appear on your map like in SH3, but I decided to try it anyway. What I soon noticed is that my watchmen can't do anything. They are incapable of sighting targets, making it impossible to find merchant vessels, and I don't notice combat vessels until they are right on top of me.

This means that I am sailing around trying to find some merchants, then before I know it my crew is yelling that we are under attack! I go back to 1x time compression and look around and see a destroyer about 500m away! Checking the log, I see that at NO point did my watchmen see her. This makes the game completely unplayable, I'm not going to drive around my patrol on 1x time and spot everything myself, that is what I have a crew for.

I must be doing something really wrong. Can someone help me. Also, my periscope is broken. It is stuck all the way up.

And can someone recommend me the "necessary" mods that I need to fix common bugs and give me the best experience.

the glitches are still happening. Sometimes the game runs like normal, sometimes my crew wont talk to me. By far the worst part is that they wont tell me when they spot ships, making the game unplayable. But I noticed it happens for other things as well. Usually when I change course the navigator yells out "New course: 67 degrees" or whatever, but sometimes when I play he wont.

So its not a problem with spotting the ships, it is with crew communications. I can talk to them by clicking on them and they will respond, but they will not talk to me when they are supposed to, like when they spot a ship or change course/speed, etc... I cannot hear them yell, nor will it show up in my log.

I really need help because this makes the game completely unplayable :damn:
For mods, I have NewUIs by TheDarkWraith and Real Navigation, which was included in the NewUIs download. The glitch occurred before I downloaded these mods, so I do not think they are the problem.

Thank you for your help.

Hello Bowcaster okay lets start with time compression

1.Do you have the Travel mode turned off: If its on then the Sub will continue moving In the time compression set

2.Is your time compression below 1024: In 1024 compression on travel mode the crew will not likely yell out unless the time compression is 512 below. I tried that once and by the time I got time compression to 1, 2 destroyers were on me:salute::salute::salute::salute:

Un enable NewUIs by TheDarkWraith then go to the options file which is
NewUIs_TDC_6_9_0_ByTheDarkWraith\data\Scripts\Menu \TheDarkWraithUserOptions

look for this heading
############# Message Box (SH3/4/5 modes) ##############

change this to True
TC1OnAnyMessageBoxText = True

You can un enable this such as travelling at a port by the button up the top right of the hud . I would normally use it .

Next find your SH5 save game folder which is usually in my documents ,
Go to SH5\data\cfg\main copy and paste these to your time compression settings .
TimeStop=0
RealTime=1
LandProximity=1,32
CriticalDamage=1,32
CrewEfficiency=256
AirEnemyDetected=1,32
SoundEffects=2
CharacterAnim=32
FriendDetected=1,32
EnemyDetected=1,32
RadioReport=1,32
Particles=32
PrayState=1,32
HunterState=1,32
3DRender=32
Maximum=256,32

Travel mode is not for travelling . It is for when your game drops to 1tc because of a warning such as too close to land etc .

Install IRAI which fixes the AI.
You will find it in my mods list .

Sober, I did every thing you said, and it seems to be working. I say seems, because this glitch comes and goes, so I would have to restart the game a bunch ofttimes to confirm that it is actually working as it should.

Problem is that now my time compression is limited to 256. It won't let me go any higher than that. More importantly I cannot see ships until they are very close to me. My spotter called out a ship so I went on deck and looked for it. I went full speed ahead, and now finally I can see part of it and it is only 7500m away... I can see the top of the ship, the towers and masts, etc but I cannot see the hull. Reminds me of what far away ships looked like in SH3. He is way too close for me to only be able to see half the ship.

Edit: hull still not visible at 5000m...

Just checked again problem still not solved. It's just random, sometimes when I start the game it works fine. Sometimes it doesn't work. Crew is silent, will not yell when they see a contact, I change speed, change direction, or do a variety of other actions.

Most such as sighting a contact, changing direction, measuring depth under keel cannot be heard, and will not appear in the message box, but when I change speed it will appear in the message box, though no one will yell it. This happens irregardless of what TC I am on.

Now for mods I have NewUIs by TheDarkWraith, Real Navigation, IRAI, and Trevally Automations.

when you started the campaign can you click on the upgrade officer in the bunker and enable upgrades ?

Make sure you got patch to 1.1 or 1.2(preferably) and If all else fails do a complete reinstall.

Travel mode is not for travelling.

Bowcaster - the reason your time compression now maxes out at 256 are the settings sober directed you to alter, seen above. The values represent time compression in normal mode and 'travel mode' respectively (or is it the other way around? I forget, though it should be obvious from testing), separated by the comma in each case, and you'll note the last value, listed 'maximum' is at 256. You can alter these values to suit your preferences; the ones you have are the ones Sober uses which aren't necessarily suitable for anyone else.

'Travel mode' is, quite the contrary - used for travel, however it is only intended for travel in safe waters. Travel mode relaxes your spotting settings so you can make your way past multiple (friendly) contacts quickly & easily and should be used within 100km of port or so, no further. Beyond that it reduces enemy spotting times so much it becomes dangerous.

Re your original problem, can only suggest a reinstall of game & mods; there's no reason why your watch crew should be failing to spot ships. Regarding ones where you visually can't see the hull at 5000 yards, move closer. SH5 simulates the variance in wave & ship heights, not always correctly, but there's nothing you can do about it.

Another thing to bear in mind is that when starting a new campaign, you should save in bunker on load & then reload that save before proceeding, otherwise the sea layers don't load correctly. Sounds like this or a bad mod install are responsible for your problem - I can't see how checking or altering your upgrades (no offence sober) is going to make any difference whatsoever.

EDIT: And yes, like Admiral says, make sure you're patched to 1.20 before modding.

I uninstalled the entire game. Re-installed, glitch still there. Tried playing with none of the mods active, glitch still there. I can't figure out how to fix this.

It should be at version 1.2 because I have it on Steam, which should handle the updates for me.

The glitch could have to do with something weird that happens whenever I launch the game. As Steam users know, the first time you play a game, it performs the first time setup and installs the game. Well SH5 does the first time setup every time I play the game, which is really weird. After the setup, it goes to the Ubisoft launchpad thing, where I can press play to start the game.

The first time setup says "Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP1 Setup" every time I launch the game.

Verify that it is 1.2 to do this run the game and look at the top right corner

Hmm, shouldn't be doing that. Sounds like that could be the trouble, don't know much about .net but have you tried downloading the latest version from microsoft?

I bought SH5 a few days ago after hearing the DRM had at last been disabled. Unfortunately I am also having exactly the same problem as the OP - my crew is not calling out air or surface contacts reliably, not am I being dropped out of time compression even when under attack.

I do have a few mods installed currently, here's my load order:

No Logo Intro Menu_Animation v. 01.00 by AvM
Accurate German Flags
Window_Lights_Redone_V1

Dynamic Environment SH5 Basemod (normal ) V2.1
Dynamic Environment SH5 DarkerNights V2.1
Dynamic Environment SH5 Waves (realistic version) V2.1
Small_trees_SH5_V1
sobers_realistic_underwater_FX2
sobers see thru wake fix
sobers 3D deck spray mod V7
NOZAURIO'S SKIN (Standar No Emblem) v-1.0.0
SteelViking's Interior Mod V1.2
SteelViking's Interior Mod V1.2.2 Patch

German U-Boat Crew Language Pack
Equipment_Upgrades_Fix_v1_4_byTheBeast
Equipment_Upgrades_Fix_v1_4_Patch_1
Equipment_Upgrades_Fix_v1_4_Patch_1_HotFix

I am patched up to 1.2 and am running the game with administrator privileges; I have the DVD version.

This seems to happen even when I have "Travel Mode" disabled.

I also see the problem where distant ships appear extremely "low in the water" compared to when they are up close - some of them appear up to their decks - just an existing graphics bug?

Unfortunately the lack of crew spotting and time acceleration working correctly makes the game very frustrating to play - I had a fantastic convoy attack and battle with their escorts, but then on my way back to Kiel to refit I was sunk by an aircraft while at a high level of time compression. Another time I was under time compression while travelling on the surface, heard a "bang" then dropped to normal time and went to the deck view to see a destroyer sat 500m off the bow shelling me!

I'm on vacation right now. I can post from my iPad, but I won't be able to play the game until I get home on Friday. I will post my results when I get back.

Actually, I had the exact same problem with my Steam version before I bought the DVD copy. And don't even bother trying to find advice on the Steam forums or their "support" hotline. "You bought it already, now go pound sand."

It never affected my game, though. It loaded, played and modded just fine. No CTDs whatsoever. I just had to look at that silly ""Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP1 Setup" install every time I started it up. Went away when I got the DVD version.

(Which gave me another set of problems when the DVD version, in spite of me having uninstalled the Steam version and scrubbed the registry of any references to it, still insisted that SH5 was still installed so I couldn't use the "Install" option on the DVD splash screen. Wasn't hard to circumvent, though. I just ran setup.exe directly from the DVD and all is good now).
