Well, it's December 1943 and I just waxed and entire convoy. I thought those days were over.
I got discovered on approach, so I decided to try out my Type V homing torpedoes. I kept 4 inside the stern of my type IXC.
Piece of cake! Those destroyers come hustling towards me and I send one of these babies in their general direction and haul butt. I fire about 2000 m out. The torp sails away, and about 500m in front of the target starts "wiggling" as it homes on the destroyer. It usually misses on the first pass, but curls around behind the target and BANG the magnetic fuse nails it on the turn-back. I took out 4 of the 5 escorts that way. The final escort I let chase me at periscope depth and then just as he was on me I dropped a noisemaker, which threw him into a turn that I banked into and nailed him with a steamer from the bow tubes.
With all the escorts gone, I laid into the convoy. I got them all but 2 - one wounded tanker with guns, and one merchie with a gun only on the stern.
I surfaced in front of the merchie with the stern gun and plowed him under with my deck gun. Then I moved in on the sinking tanker and finished him off, too.
This was over in DO61 or similar, north of South America.
