So I was cruising southeast along the British coast looking for something to kill with the two torpedoes I had left before going to refit, and I get a radio report of a convoy. So I set a course to intercept and start going. Once I get to my intercept position, the fog is pretty bad and it's almost pitch black night, so I start a zig-zag search pattern because I'm sure I got to the spot ahead of the convoy. I'm sailing along, waiting for a visual contact, and then it happens.
I find myself almost directly in the middle of a 17-ship convoy. One of the ships almost sailed right through me. Apparently, though, they never saw me, as they are still on the same course. I'm trying to pick out the juciest targets for my two torpedoes, but it's difficult to see in the dark even at close range.
Just had to pause the game and share that.

Always get the tanker first. They're the most rewarding.
FYI a magnetic fused torpedo run about .5 meeter under the center of a tanker is normally a 1 shot affair.:yeah:

FYI
The magnetic pistol does not work in SH5

Since the last patch it seems it does sometimes? It apparently just has to be really really close.
Or mabye its a fluke and i got lucky... Or maybe the bottom of the ship sticks down further then it appear (like SH2- some ships had almost half meeter thick invisible buffers around them)?

I managed to nab a 7,000 ton supply ship with a torpedo, then followed along behind the convoy as it lagged behind the group and finished in with a few deck gun shots. Fortunately the group had no escorts. The 2nd of my last 2 went after another supply ship(from my position, I could only realistically hit the two ships in the rear of the convoy), but I forgot to "deselect" the ship with the space bar just before firing. Someone should really fix that aiming.

After this encounter I started to head for home, as I was out of torpedoes and my hull integrity was at 75% from an earlier raid. On the way back, I got a radio ordering me to report status and location. So I did. Then I noticed the radio sound kept playing unusually long. Then I CTDed. Fortunately, my autosave kicked in right after my torpedo hit that ship, but for some reason when I reloaded, I was still out of torpedoes and that ship hadn't been hit at all, so I had to finish her entirely with the deck gun. Made me quite angry.

What time frame are you in? I just started the second Campaighn 'Happy Times' and those juicy lone targets are hard to come by. They're all in convoys with about 15 Merchants +6-8 Destroyers screening all the way around.
General procedure is to get in position ahead of them, Let the screen pass, then come to scope depth and start tearing them up right in the midst of the convoy. After exhausting my forward fish, I drop a decoy (press Y) dive deep and go silent and sneak away. All the merchants churning around me + the decoy leaves the DD's utterly confused and i find them circling the area i launched the attack from and deployed the decoy.

Oh, I'm in 1939 still, and this was a 17-ship convoy with no escorts. :D Unfortunately I only got the one ship. Always find those convoys when I'm almost out of torpedoes.
I did just run into one of those escorted ones, though. Seven merchants with a ring of nine destroyers around them. No idea how I'm going to get in there.
How in the world do I launch decoys with Stormy's mod installed? Pressing Y rigs for silent running.

Not sure about stormy's Since im just getting back into SH after almost 2 years :D
As for getting into the ring of destroyers, Get directly INFRONT of them (about 5km) and go down to scope depth. when they get inside of say 2km, go silent, drop you're scope and let them Pass.
I have Never seen destroyers go active UNLESS THEY DETECT YOU. which means if you stay stealth early in the early war they can pass within a few hundred feet of you and never notice- if you shut your motors off completely. They also cant hear Behind them very well. After they pass a good bit raise scope and maneuver into position and start taking down ships. Try and be in the center of the convoy when you do this as all the merchants kinda cover your own motor noises.
I'm in late 1940 right now with the VIIC, And this works quite well for me. also once the 'deed' is done dont linger to watch the fires :P dive down in silent running and get out of there.. drop one decoy too for good measure. Vanilla DDs always go for them.
