View Full Version : Merchant Fleet causes CTD

Here is my current list of mods:

When I try to load the Merchant Fleet mod 3.2, it causes a crash to desktop when I try to load a mission (home in base).

I tried not loading the optional skins, and it still crashes to desktop.

I thought I had a pretty stout system:

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Steve

Adding ships is difficult as so many files have to match exactly or there is a CTD. It is extremely difficult to locate the problem.

Just a hunch mate, but try disable the DC Water disturbance mod. It gave me no end of trouble.

Best regards.

I don't know if this will work for you, but I just recently installed SH3+GWX3 and added the Merchant Fleet Mod with the skin packs. I did it differently than you apparently did with JSGME (just looking at your screen shots). I added all the separate skin packs (11 of them) to the MOD file and they show up in JSGME as 11 items to select and activate after you activate the MFM3.2 mod. You will probably get messages about conflicts on most of them when you activate them. The authors "readme" file says to ignore these messages and I did when I activated mine. 8 of the skin packs are "grayed out" on my JSGME screen, but I have not had a problem yet. I got sunk by DD's once because I was just looking at the ships and not paying attention.

I have the same amount of memory as you do and the same 64bit OS. I also have the same i7 930 cpu but am running it at about 3.4 GHz. Your hardware is up to it unless you have a lot of non-essential stuff running in the background using up the memory you need to run this game.

Hint 1: Are you using the 4-Gig patch? If not, it doesn't matter how much memory you have, the game is only using 2 Gigs, and that's not enough.

Hint 2: Get Gamebooster. It will shut off pretty much all your background programs.

Is this true under Windows 7-64?

It's true under any 64 bit OS mate, I used to run the 4 gb patch using Vista 64 bit with no problems. Sorry I never mentioned this before, I thought from your post you was having trouble activating the mod

Ok, you simply click/double click the 4gb_patch.exe a window similar to windows explorer will open. Now browse to your SH3.exe, now click open in the bottom of the window. Hey presto your SH3.exe is patched :yeah:

Can this be done with other games as well as SH3 :hmmm:

Indeed it can Kaleun, for instance I have done the very same to ROF and Falcon 4. Not sure if it has made that much of a difference tho, they both ran smooth as silk beforehand :yep:

Ah, I did not know about this program!

I remember some kind of flag you could set to Windows on boot long ago under XP I think. I did not know about this being required on X64 systems.

Thanks.

Fubar2Niner ...

Not sure if I'm doin' this right and if anybody knows please feel free to chime in ...

I double click on the 4gb_patch exe and it opens up

I then select the folder where the games exe is and select it's exe
and then click open and I'm good to go

That sound like the correct procedure :06:

I have been ...

I'm on my 9th patrol April 1940 and have already sunk 118,484 tons of shipping

Uncle Karl has been very pleased so far :salute:

From experience, the events at Dunkerque in the eraly summer of 1940 causes frequent CTD's due to extreme amount of ships in the area regardless of your memory or the like in the computer. Huge traffic is a pain for your system as such massive events never happened in the stock SH3 if i recall correctly.

In addition to using the 4GB patch for the game's .exe file, the above is also a worthy suggestion. IIRC correctly this mod was found to cause corrupted saves and associated CTDs from whatever point its effects are triggered by events in your game. So you can play with it enabled *until* something happens that triggers it and then you're borked from that point on. AFAIK no fix was ever found.

Weird that it does not work from here. Must be an internet traffic jam or something! :)

Thanks for the link Frau! That made the mod work fine!!!!

Man, it is AWESOME!

And after a couple of years of GWX, I was just to the point where I could ID just about any ship without looking at the manual. Now I'm back to zero again!

I notice all the ship names are some kind of code. I remember reading in the mod thread that this was intentional to prevent any crashes from mistyped names. Have the names ever been added properly?

If you are talking about how the names display in the game, in order to make them display as "medium merchant" or whatever instead of "M36b" etc., you need to add entries for them in your EnglishNames.cfg file located in the Data\Sea folder. It controls the display names for all the vessels you encounter. I believe there was something about that included in IABL's original MFM download but I don't know about now.

Thanks FK for the 4GB patch, that did the trick.

I have updated the englishnames file.

Question:

To install the skins, I just used JSGME to install the MFM and then the skins mod.

But I read in the mod thread about turning on different parts of the mod for different years of the war to reflect the different ship painting schemes as the war goes on.

Do I have to install the skins some other way than above?

I'm using SH3 Commander and I read that you can use it to load up what skins based on year. Do I still need to do that? How do you do it?

Incidentally, on a hunch, I tested my screen capture capability after installing the 4gb patch. And, hooray, IT WORKS!
