I was doing a practice mission to get better at my manual TDC skills, my first torpedo left and while checking the nav map to see how it was doing, it was going in small circles. Every time it came around it was very close to sub and would of killed me. AOB was right, speed and distance, never heard of that type of malfunction before. I just thought a bad torpedo would hit the target and not blow, a dud.

How common are malfunctions like that and what would make it malfunction like that in real life?

Maybe you fired a homing torpedo against a merchant. And your motor was louder :D

that happened to me a few times back in SH3 days

I was using the basic G7a T1 torpedo and my engines were off. I can image a homing torpedo coming around after firing.

I've never played SH5 (I'm in SH3) but circular runners are well documented in real life.

Yeah I just read about it the day before it happened and I cant remember were I read it. It might of been in The Submarine Commander's Handbook. If I find it again I will post it here.

The first version (both german and american) of the torpedoes launched by subs in WW2 were too imperfect. In SH4 and SH5 sometimes the torpedo runs a circle pattern, closing to much to the sub (in real life, a US submarine, i dont remember the name, was hit by her own torpedo), and of course its a "realism option", not a bug.
