Here's hoping it may be the beginning of something tangible/positive.

The landmark meeting will come in the coming weeks, before the establishment of a Taliban office in Qatar, according to Western and Afghan officials.
The Taliban have refused previously to recognise the government of President Hamid Karzai.
Senior officials in Kabul say the Taliban have agreed to the meeting.
The militant group, contacted by the BBC, refused to comment on the move.
The Taliban have so far insisted they would only talk to the US and other allies of the Kabul government.

I am sure that some deal will be made. That's how things work in that neck of the woods.

^^

As distasteful as it may be to western ideals, it's a factor we have consistently failed to recognise in just about all of our military dealings in iraq and afghanistan.
I've said it before and I'll say it again; political and military leaders repeatedly underestimate the differences in culture and ideals, when expecting western modes of thinking to apply to the middle east.

By "that neck of the woods" do you mean "planet earth"?
