I notice that when I play the German campaign in SH4 v.1.5 with Operation Monsun enabled, I get the ability to outfit my U boat with torpedo mines. Does anybody know how these work and how you deploy them without blowing up your own boat? You can set the detonator to magnetic or contact, and set the running depth. How far out does the torpedo go before it stops, anchors, and arms? Is the running depth also the depth it will sit at once it stops?

You use a special Uboat for those, I forgot what is called though. To use them simply be moving at like, 2 knots, and then fire them away. I set mine to contact, and the depth matters on what your trying to sink. By default I just set them as high as possible. Its really awsome when you plant a field infront of a task force, and watching it get blown to nothing while the destroys enter a panic as they cant find you :arrgh!:

HAHA :har: I'll have to look into that U boat. I tried firing them from my bow tubes on a type IXD, but then I blew the front part of my boat off and sunk after they all detonated shortly after arming lol, Oh well. I'll look into it. I've been thinking about mining a harbor entrance, shooting a torpedo at something to stir up the hornet's nest, then sit back and watch the fireworks while my tonnage racks up

VIID is what it's called. It has vertical tubes for it, and you should put load the mines ONLY in those, otherwise they will indeed blow you up. For other boats, you should ignore them and never try to load them.

These are the biggest VIIs you can get, cause they have a separate 10m compartment added specially for the mine tubes.

I can't remember exactly when that sub is available, but look around it on the flottilla lists. I believe you can only start a new career with it - you don't get offered one as a transfer in the regular careers. It's a special career for it that Lurker designed - haven't tried it yet, but seems like a pretty cool idea!

I tried it. Pretty fun, if you ask me

plop goes a mine....plop goes another mine.....plop goes another mine....
Oh yeah, now that's what I call hunting like a boss. :arrgh!:

While they lack the instant gratification of the usual torpedo, anti-shipping missions, they have a certain educational value. A lot of submarine war patrols were rather boring and unproductive affairs.

That's what I read in Herbert Werner's book Iron Coffins. Weeks at sea and zero contacts, then a day of sheer terror followed by more weeks at sea with nothing. I can totally see how that might be taxing on the crew. I still wonder how they slept cramped in those tight quarters for weeks on end.

What impressed me even more, is the fact that some members of the crew, never left the interior of the boat during the entire patrol. This was true for the US boats too.

It is in the first page of OM post:

"12.SMA Mine deployment. Since it is not possible for me to recreate the launching of the SMA Mines from the mine tubes in the center of the Type VIID, you will be launching them trough the aft torpedo tubes;. The .sim file for the Type VIID as been modified to support 15 SMA mines and to launch and reload them ever 15 seconds. You will find that you have one already loaded in the aft tube plus 10 in ready reserve, with the remaining 4 in the external storage. To launch do the following:

A. set ships speed to 4 knots
B. go to Attack Map
C. select tube 5
D. select manual TDC input
E. set bearing to 180
F. set desired mine depth
G. launch mine with fire button
H. next mine will be ready to launch in about 15 seconds

There is a more detailed set of instructions in the X:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific\Support\OM_Readme_files, look for ***8220;SMA Mine Deployment.doc***8221;

WARNING

Do not load SMA mines in Uboats other than Type VIID
Do not load SMA mines in the forward tubes of ***8220;any***8221; Uboat
Do not load torpedoes in the aft tubes of a Type VIID "

Ok cool, thanks for the mine info. Yeah I can't even imagine how rancid the smell got below decks having not bathed for 2 months. Never seeing the sky probably did a number to a man's mental stability too. You know just on a side note, I just hit my personal best the other day in the east china sea playing with RFB 2.0. I did a ton of plotting, observing, and double checking. Then when the time came, I picked the three fattest targets, range/bearing fire, range/bearing fire, etc. all 6 Mk10's hit their mark, all three targets sunk within 45 minutes! a 15,000 Ton score in one salvo. Unbelievable. I'm never using those stupid dials to guesstimate speed ever again.
