hello everyone!
a couple of days ago i bumped into the submarine simulations and google pointed towards SH... since i haven't played any SH games, i'm looking for help...
first of all, i see a big debate still going on about which game is better, SH4 or SH5. what would be more appropriate for a newbie and what would you suggest me to do in the beginning?
any clues about settings, tips, mods are welcomed...
wish you all the best and i hope sh will keep me playing it for years!

WELCOME ABOARD! :sunny:
Which one is more appropriate is really up to what you're looking for in a submarine simulation. Do you only want to play u-boats, or are you also interested in the American campaign in the Pacific. If the latter, then SH4 is the only choice. If you want the latest, greatest graphics and a role-playing atmosphere, but access to only Type VII u-boats then SH5 is a great place to start. If you want a fully fleshed-out experience but with more dated graphics, SH3 will keep you occupied for years.
The truth is that all three are very cheap on Amazon these days, so if you get one and don't like it you can always start on another. If you go that route there is a link at the bottom of this page that gives Subsim a small cut of everything purchased at three different Amazon outlets.

:up::up: Perfect Summary !!! :up::up: Good Post!! :yeah::yeah:
Welcome:)
Steve has got it 100% right!
I play both SH4 and SH5 but my first sub sim was SH3. If you decide SH4, make sure you get it with the u-boat addon....then you have both American and German boats. Check out the threads on 'Operation Monsoon' and 'TMO' and 'Delta 9-0'
The amount of SH5 mods is growing every day almost, and the game is getting better and better. Do not pay too much attention to the negative reports that came out when SH5 was released, as the game is greatly improved with the latest mods.
Whatever you choose, you can be sure that there is a mod to suit every taste, and this forum is the right place to get help.

thanks for extensive advice... i'll buy all 3 of them and start from the newest one...
any suggestions what updates/mods should i install for the beginning and what setting should i set?
don't forget, complete beginner and first time player, don't want to get killed in my own port in the first game :P
I would try them un-modded first, just to get the hang of the basics. There is quite a lot to learn. When I started, I did not know the different types of boat or how to plot a course or anything. In that way the SH series is quite educational. And it's fun to blow things up!

I agree with Limkol with a word of caution,
The unmodded games (all three) are full of little bugs. So if you're playing the stock games at least make sure you have all the latest patches. SH4 will patch to 1.4 or 1.5 with the U-Boat missions it will also have the bug fixes.
SH5, you may need to mod a bit after your tutorial mission (when you launch your new campaign). So you can check in here to find several mods to get SH5 to use more of it's resources.
Welcome Aboard !!

If you are new to the genre I suggest that you take a look at the many online tutorials on youtube, I would recomend that you also visit Stoianm's tutorial page here on the forum. These tutorials explain in very simple terms all the aspects of the game, plotting a course, manual targeting and so on.

There is a learning curve well about a couple of days but once you get a hang of it there's no prob in playing the game at 100% realism whatsoever :)

Very true, and let me emphasize again: You do not have to play it at 100% realism from the beginning. You can ramp it up as you go along, unlike a lot of games out there where you don't have that option. You either dedicate yourself to spending a couple of days to learning the ropes or you don't try at all.
Not so here. You can start out dead simple and have a hell of a time, then gradually increase the challenge until, one day sooner than you thought, find yourself playing at 100% without even having noticed.
Add to that all of the additional mods created by this awesome community of ingenious and tireless modders (and no, I'm not one of them, so I'm not patting my own back here) and you'll have something as close as you can get to "being there" without actually inventing a time machine and risk getting killed for real. Oh, and learning German, of course :03:
I like sims where you can just "jump in", but I also love sims where you still get a good "feel" for the subject matter no matter what your realism settings are. The Silent Hunter series are great in that respect. You learn the basics right away and then, when you start getting curious as I did way back when I started out on the franchise, you can learn more and more and challenge yourself accordingly. Or you can decide "this is not for me" and STILL not feel like you've wasted your time playing an "arcade game."
Oh, and another thing I've always loved about this series? Even if you don't switch "manual targeting" on before you start your first patrol, the TDC is still fully functional all along if you decide along the way to try it out.
