Ok - I bought this game for 6 bucks through subsim on Amazon. I had played with it a little when it first came out at a friends house. I saw potential.

Now, I have had this game a while - and I guess it is just me but its just... well... not fun.

All the steps taken to make the game more "realistic" - prettier graphics, FPS style wandering through the boat, etc - it just doesn't resonate with me.

Maybe its the clunky controls. Maybe its the lack of a way to actually HIT something with torpedos (I kid you not, I'm like a tornado and I can't hit the broad side of a trailer park to save my life!), maybe its the fact that my u-boat won't dive unless I personally close the conning tower hatch. I mean really, not a single other soul on this boat has the brains to do it when I order us to dive? The campaign structure just doesn't work for me. What ever happened to offering to start me outside port so I didn't have to muck around 30 minutes (through constant time scale resets) just to get to a clear area where I could get to my target objective. Yes, I know some of you love it - and I did the first 2 or 3 times - but it got old. Options are good....

Mods have helped, but this game just doesn't have the IT factor that 3/4 did for me personally. Maybe one day I will reinstall it, look to see if there are some good mods out that fix the problems I had with this game. For now, 3 with GWX is going to have to be reinstaled.

I love the silent hunter games, because its challenging and rewarding when using manual TDC to take out a target.

Each captain uses different techniques and tools to send the input to the TDC. Some captains just look at a target and knows the speed and AOB. Others use plots on map and mathematical equations. While others use pre-made instruments to help get a solution. Whichever he or she chooses, makes for a rewarding experience when that torpedo hits the target, keeps us coming back for more.

There is a slight learning curve, not much, to understand manual TDC. I didn't get it right away, but once I got the idea down, the game came to life.

I believe SHIII - GWX, a player has to use time controls to speed up to get to patrol area. I always disliked that, but with SH5 I just enjoy sailing out to patrol area. The new visuals made it enjoyable to stand out on conning tower and take in the scenes.

The game straight out of the box, it didn't hit me. I almost uninstalled it. The main thing with me was the User-interface. When I found a UI mod that made the game worthwhile for me, I stuck to it and find it playable and enjoyable.

The thing with SH5, it does need a few mods out of the box for a player to like it.
