Berlin newspapers are reporting that the North Korean ambassador to Germany did a bit of fishing on Sunday -- albeit without a license.

As it happens, the North Korean embassy in Berlin appears to have a special affinity with nature. On Thursday, the official North Korean news agency reported a "natural wonder" that occurred at the embassy in Berlin on Dec. 20, the day after the news of the death of leader Kim Jong-il was announced. A small songbird spent an hour at the entrance to the embassy, apparently paying tribute to the late Kim. "It seemed that upon hearing the sad news of the demise of the outstanding great man, the bird flew to the mourning station to express condolences and flew away after standing vigil," the news agency reported on its English site. :har:

Diplomatic staff of foreign embassies is said to abuse their immunity status quite often in Berlin, insiders say. Mostly, traffic offences, from jumping red traffic-lights over exceeding speed limits to parking where parking is not permitted. But also little rumbles anf fights in Berlin nightlife.

Imo immunity status should also apply to diplomatic activities, not covering offences of everyday regular laws. You stay in a foreign country, you follow its rules and laws. If you don't like it, stay away, or ask your government for another post in another country.

By law it is seen as poaching, when you go after fishes owned by somebody, a fish company or a landlord. However, 2 years is the possible maximum penalty only, when you do it for trading and at huge scale and/or at the cost of a second party holding rights or running a business, a fish company in whose facilities or waters you commit the deed.

When you get caught angling fishes that are in a landlord's possession, without having a licence or outside the season, you can expect to get sued for a fee of around around 600-1500 euros (plus fees for lawyers, court procedures etc.), if you did it for private consummation only, two or three salmons for example, and it is your first arrest. If you did it for your own business, then the penalties indeed rocket upwards.

When you fish without licence our outside the season, in a public water, for personal consummation, and the fishes are not the legal possession of somebody, it usually is seen as theft, with according lesser penalties around 50-200 Euros.

Interesting, that happened about 5km from where I live. Never even read the news, probably because the mentioned Berlin Newspapers are terrible tabloids.

As for the NK embassy: It is pretty close to where the Führerbunker used to be (Now a parking lot and a lawn where dogs take a crap. Gotta love the people of Berlin.) and is one of the uglier buildings in that neighbourhood. As for the birds and the flowers mentioned: We have had one of the warmest decembers since decades. Following directly on the driest november ever since weather data is recorded. Kinda understandable that flowers get confused. In fact some of the trees and flowers in the park near my appartment are showing first signs of colour, too. Probably a token of respect to my failing health, since I fear I might be coming down with a cold.
