View Full Version : Seeing underwater with the OP

Sometimes when I'm around 30 metres or so I can use the observation periscope to watch ships pass above me. I have GWX, and it basically works as long as there is sufficient light at my depth. It also works when I'm scraping the bottom, and that seems to work when I'm really deep. It comes in especially useful when I'm being hunted and I'm too scared to ping the depth under keel.

My question is: how realistic is all of this? Would it have really been possible to see out the periscope whilst submerged like that?

Thanks.:)

I cannot answer your question about how realistic it is to be able to see underwater with the periscope, but I suppose under sufficient lighting conditions (i.e. when near the surface) you should be able to see ships pass above you.
What I can assure you is that there is no reason for you to be afraid of using your fathometer ping because the AI ships in GWX can't hear it.

I think it's been discussed around these parts before, and iirc the consensus was yes you could but not very deep - two reasons, the pressure rings need the scope to be fully retracted to work at pretty much any depth, and the more extended the greater the degree of 'snapping it off'.

I'm no marine engineer, but I'd say even 30 m would be too great for the seals if extended. But hey, it's only a game :D
