View Full Version : DD mimics my manuvers...weird

Here's a interesting note. I've had a friendly DD (Destroyer) and an enemy Destroyer both do this weird thing. I get shadowed until I save game and restart.
This latest time there was a circle of 9 or 10 enemy destroyers protecting a Lord Nelson BB +. Anyhow, one broke formation and went ahead of me. As I would change course, the DD would change with me. I was at least 25 km away and no matter what I would do, this DD stuck to me like glue. It wasn't reacting to my manuvers, it was copying at the same time. Mimicking.
This happened leaving port one time with one of ours as well.
When I saved and reloaded the game I lost the DD with one turn because it never really knew I was there.
Weird little bug. It's not a real big deal as it doesn't take much to fix. I just thought it was for real at first before I figured out that it was a bug.

You shouldn't save game when you submerged or if any of ships near to you. Thats why this bugs appear...

Do not save your game while you're submerged, sunk any ship (that sunk ship maybe appear again in front of you)...
Only save when you're surfaced and before your attack.

Yeah, I'm with you there, I didn't want to give that impression. Although I did save once, I was surfaced because I was 25km away and couldn't have been seen by the DD.
I know about saving submerged, but this little bug started before I saved anyway.
I was doing the most radical course changes and the DD would do the same without delay. What I did to correct the bug was to save and exit (surfaced). When I reloaded the save, I changed course and the DD went on it's way.
When it happened with the friendly DD it was the same thing, the DD was just nailed to my boat, always keeping the same distance.
OK, when I play SH4, if I loaded a certain mod it would cause a bug, for no reason there would be a smoke plume rising from the water. This smoke plume would follow the boat always at the same distance, and nothing I could do would get rid of it until I found the mod causing the problem.
This DD bug reminds me of that, so I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else.

Interesting. Being a longtime SH3 player, I followed all those rules in SH5 and still got the 'ghost DD'.

i havent been playing but its my understanding the issue is related to saving too quickly while the ship is still being seen by the game (wether sunk or not) so the key is to wait until you are out of sensor range of the ship and it has dissappeared from the map.

It seems to happen whether submerged or not, and tbh there's not much you can do to avoid it. However, a simple save & reload will fix it every time. :up:

I have at time picked up a German DD as I leave port. So this is just after the game has re-set itself (big loading screen). With this im sure its not the user causing it.

For me - I keep this extra air defence with me:D. It always leaves after it has attacked something or as said. a save load.

It looks like at some point when you pass these ships and they latch onto you - that you become a group leader with the DD staying at its original bearing and distance untill its orders (bugged script:hmmm:) update.

These orders are updated with a save/load or after it attacks something.

:rotfl2: That's as good a theory as any I've heard! :rock:

I did notice that they're really no problem, as they never seem inclined to attack.

Now I'd really be curious to see what the AI says this latched on unit is doing. One should open up the AI editor in game and see if this latched on unit is actually a single unit or part of a group. If part of a group what tactic is it using? :hmmm: If you can tell me that tactic and if using my IRAI or not I can probably figure out why it's happening :yep:

i always wondered if it was something in the game saying if no course or waypoints are attatched follow course of nearest ship such as if their group leader is sunk the others have no brain to do anything on their own.

i have seen this ship action from merchants, warships, and planes but planes leave by themself due to speed

maybe is a bug in detection where if you are detected they override previous settings but dont have anything new to tell them what to do

this happened in sh4 as well but not very often

Yeah, this enemy DD started out as part of a perfect circle of 10 or 11 DD's, as soon as my boat came within sight distance (when I started to course change for health reasons) it broke off from the group and I became it's mother....Oh brother. I don't need these kids :O:

..Yeah, it never even flinched, I think that's it...the group leader theory so...

...if you could tell me how to open the AI editor, if I can, next time it happens I'll save some screen shots or save the file if it's that easy and send it along.

Open up your \My Documents\SH5\data\cfg\main.cfg. Make this section look EXACTLY like this:

[DEVELOPING]
Modding=Yes
MenuEditor=Yes
DebugScripts=Yes

Fire up the game. Go to game options. Select windowed mode. Save changes and exit game.

Now fire up the game again. Go into your career and begin mission. When you notice this strange unit behavior right click on the window bar at the top and select AI editor :up:

I know this because I've literally taken this game apart piece by piece, dll by dll.

I've seen weird DDs too when I was ending a patrol there were some British DDs and they were weirdly going around in circles but when they were doing that THEY KEPT COURSE WITH ME they were spinning in circles close nearby but they would stop briefly and keep course with me then spinning in circles again.

i have seen that too but its a little different situation because in that case they are in attack mode, they had a ghost image of you and thought they were depth charging a sub

The ones that annoyed me didn't do that they just spun in circles from SW England up to NW of Scapa.

I think that when they are spinning in circles - they are just trying to hold range and bearing, but are set at a higher speed than you are travelling.
