When are the different subs and upgrades made available?

Currently wondering if i should waste my renown on a type C, or wait for a type IX which i want to try out.

It's Dec 22nd 1941 in my current game, and i believe drumbeat started shortly into 1942, so i'm expecting them about then.

You should be able to get a type IX right now

Think my game's bugged out :/

It's randomly placed some homing torps in my sub, but i've only got the 2 normal ones still available to purchase.

Still can't see any IX subs, only IIA/D and VIIB/C.

Do i have to get the C before more become available? Or can i just hold out?

How come u can get a VIIC/42 in the game when they were never built in the war? The design was dropped in place of the Electroboot was it not?
I think you can get it in Feb 1944,not a bad sub for assisting our Afrika troops.

Yeah I think ur games buggered out mate cause the VII & IX are available at the start of the war,but u need 7500 renown to get the IX
Which flotila are you based at?

ah, i only had 6k, so couldn't see it.

Didn't realise i'd need that much to get one, so was a bit confused.

Also depends on what flotilla you are in

Hit the same Clemons destroyer now twice with a homing torp, each time it crashes the game.

On the equipment screen if you click the question mark in the bottom right-hand corner it will bring up a list of all available equipment and when it is available.

The only advantage I see of the VIIC over VIIB is it dives 2 seconds faster. I believe the VIIC also has slightly lower top speeds when submerged and on the surface.

The biggest advantage to the type IX is the large torpedo loadout and the big deck gun. The deck gun is useful until 1941 when merchants start carrying guns of their own. After that, it is hardly worth engaging targets with the deck gun as one single hit from the enemy will take your hull integrity down to the point that you can no longer dive to your maximum, and this will be deadly if you encounter escorts. It's not worth blowing an entire mission over a single kill.

Myself, I go for the Type IX as soon as I can get it and enjoy using that deck gun for all of 1940 to rack up the kills.

Earlier on in SH3, and all of SH5, whenever i get attacked from the air it's just one or two aircraft.

Now however i get attacked suddenly by 20 bombers.

If I am not mistaken, the VII flotilla will allow you to get a IX the earliest- (based in Lorient).

What about starting in the 2nd flotila and the start of the war in " Wilhelmshaven", even though he starts with a type VII he could sink a heap of merchants with that until has enough renown for a type IX and it will still be fairly early in the war, & he will have the IX uboat. Or is he not using GWX Mod

Im using the IXB for the first time and the damage you can do to a convoy is impressive. I was always put off this boat cause of the slow dive time, but the pro's outway the con :salute:

What flotilla, how much renown, and what month in 1944 is the XXI available?

I want to make sure i have enough renown to get it, but also want to upgrade my current boat.

@Aegrim

You can amass renown during gameplay, or (why wait?) you can give yourself as much as you want after completing your first career patrol.

The following procedure allows you to up-grade both your boat and crew however you want, subject only to the timeline for availability of boat options.....unless you edit those files as well.

To change your renown, edit My Documents/SH3 (or whatever name you gave this directory)/data/cfg/careers/your player's name/Patrols.cfg

Scroll down to the bottom of the file. Edit the 3rd line from the bottom:

DeltaRenown= insert whatever number you want here

Save, exit, and start your next career patrol, using your new renown to up-grade your boat and crew before leaving port.

Think about this; by default, SH3 gives you a mix of qualified and unqualified Petty Officers and oddly qualified line Officers. There is no such thing as an unqualified Petty Officer, and all line officers would be at least qualified as watchmen. Your L.I. would be a qualified mechanic and repairman too.

You can fix those errors to get a more realistic - and if desired, historically accurate - crew starting with your 2nd patrol. To do this, you need to edit My Documents/SH3 (or whatever name you gave this directory)/data/cfg/careers/your player's name/Crew_Career_x.cfg where x is the number of your last patrol.

The officers are listed first. [CREW_MEMBER_0] is the bridge Watch Officer; _2 is the L.I., _3 is the Navigator; _4 is the Weapons Officer. For some reason, _1 is always blank. Their ranks are usually an 8 (Leutnant).

For example - my IIWO on the bridge (Watchman)

[CREW_MEMBER_0]
Name=Viktor Marbach
Index=17
NrComp=0
Type=2
Grad=8
Renown=500.000000
Patrols=1
Morale=0.800000
Fatigue=0.000000
HealthStatus=0
WasWounded=No
HitPoints=15.000000
Experience=501.000000
Rank=8
NrQual=1......the number of qualifications he has
Qualification0=0......Watchman

I always triple-qualify my officers, so I'll make the following changes and additions:

NrQual=3...................can be 0 to 3
Qualification0=0.........Watchman (unchanged)
Qualification1=1.........Gunner
Qualification2=2.........Flak gunner

These are the qualification codes:

0 = Watchman
1 = Gunner
2 = Flak gunner
3 = Radio/sonar (can not be given to an officer)
4 = Helmsman (non-functional in SH3)
5 = Mechanic
6 = Torpedo
7 = Medic
8 = Repair

My L.I. [Crew_Member_ 2] is double-qualified as a minimum; I usually add a 3rd qualification - maybe gunner or flak gunner - just to have a spare:

NrQual=2
Qualification0=5
Qualification1=8

I consider my Navigator [Crew_Member_ 3] to be a Warrent Officer, so he keeps his default Helmsman qualification, but I augment him a bit in case the Control Room gets damaged.

NrQual=3
Qualification0=4
Qualification1=8
Qualification2=7

My Weapons Officer [Crew_Member_ 4] is also my IWO so is triple-qualified just like my IIWO on the bridge. They are interchangeable if the bridge guy is killed.

NrQual=3
Qualification0=0
Qualification1=1
Qualification2=2

I can keep scrolling down to find each Petty Officer and assign them whatever single qualification I desire.

Then I go to sea.

Oh FFS, i went and quitsaved during an air attack. I'd already dove to 70m and they were bombing an area away from me.

Now i reload and there's lots of explosion noises, and my uboat is rolling over a few times and taking damage, then death.

EDIT - Modified main.cfg in documents to increase time dialation, now my entire crew has been wiped clean.

EDIT - Loaded a save from the end of the last patrol instead of the one before leaving port. Everything is still there, but the custom renown is no longer working.

Fixed it
