Hello everybody here! I am your newest visitor and now mamber :)
I was browsing your fine forums since 2 days to look for some mods. Since I was planning to reinstall Silent Hunter III (I´ve never managed to REALLY play it... Since all these years :( ) I thought about adding a few mods here and there. Alot of you guys have created awesome stuff and this will make the game even better.
The only mod I have tried was GWX 2.6 back in the day when I planned to finaly begin my first campagin in Silent Hunter III. Since I had to abort the.... 7th try? I took a longer break from mods in general.
But hell, THIS time I will start and finish, all the way from 1939 to 1945 :p Heavily motivated via a Lets Play of one of your fellow members (Frontier359) I was being sent here to aquire some of the mods he was using. I already got the newest version of the GWX 3.0 Gold (Is this the latest version?) mod.
Since I dont plan to bore you any longer with my blabberish... :p
My question is: Will I have significant problems with a 16:9 widescreen (Resolution 1360 x 768)? I heard a few romours here and there.... To be honest, I am quite scared. Well, tomorrow is the day and I will eventually find out before anyone is able to reply :)
Nicest greetings and a big ahoy!

WELCOME ABOARD! :sunny:
I've been playing SH3 for almost seven years, and have never finished a career. I always stop and start over every time some cool new mod comes along. Now I'll never finish the war in one stop because I use the 'Realistic Career Length' function of SH3 Commander. No captain ever did more that six to eight patrols before being promoted.
Since you asked, GWX3 is a good overall supermod, combining graphics and gameplay improvements. The perfect companion is SH3 Commander, which does for your career what the supermods do for the game itself.
Your widescreen monitor should pose no problems. What happens is that the game stretches to the corners and there is some distortion. Some like the mods that correct that, but I just got used to it and ignore it. My resolution is set to 1440 x 900.
On my widescreen I get the blank vertical bars on both sides. I'd rather suffer with that than get a headache from a warped perspective. Like Steve, I also use the realistic career length in SH3 Commander. It adds pucker factor to the game, for I never know which patrol will be my last. I've had careers as short as five patrols. It rather forces you to make the most of your opportunities. I begin in 1939 with a fresh captain and green crew. I play until that captain is KIA or retired, at which point I begin a new career in the month and year where the previous career ended. That way I get to experience the rising and falling fortunes of war. By 1943, or even sooner, you realize you can no longer treat the enemy with contempt, if you even dare to in GWX.

Welcome aboard to the best Sim and forum ever. No major problems with wide screen. Recommend you use SHIII Commander and install all mods by JSGM. Installing additional mods may crash you until you get the proper load sequence on them. It is trial and error with mods but they are all great. Congrats to our modders.
:yeah:
ive gone through 1 complete carrer, but now I use the realistic carrer lenght with SH3 Commander. Anyway I recomend deffently getting the commander, then GWX 3.0 Gold, I use the lifeboat mod, and the deck gun in all weather mod, mostly because its a bit unrealistic, oh I can use the deck gun because its raining, what ever will I do! Send bernhard out there!

Welcome aboard :salute:
If you use Commander (which I wholeheartedly recommend you do) and GWX (3 - it is that latest, and last) then you'll also need the GWX3_SH3Commander_CFGFiles.exe file available from Jimbuna's link in his signature.
I'm suprised it's not already been mentioned! :o
I wish you the best of luck getting to 1945.

Welcome aboard Avenger176, have fun, make friends and enjoy your stay. I'm guessing you spotted Frontier's youtube vids, nice vids, I'm subscribed myself :D Have to echo Steve's remarks, I too have never completed a career, but it's a hell of a sleigh ride trying :haha:
Best regards.

Welcome aboard!
I have never made it through the war alive, so good luck!
You may very well have problems in widescreen!
For me (and I forget my resolution now), when I used the widescreen mod I had two problems, one major, one minor:
The major problem:
When you click inside the periscope or UZO view to turn the scope, when you then click again to exit the scope the cursor re-appears directly over the torpedo fire button and fires whatever tube is currently selected!!!
The only fix for this is to install a mod, such as some of the TDC mods that re-locates the fire button. Or change to another, sub-optimal resolution.
The minor problem:
Attempting to do a screen capture causes a crash to desktop.

...and the deck gun in all weather mod, mostly because its a bit unrealistic, oh I can use the deck gun because its raining, what ever will I do! Send bernhard out there!
So now you have people shooting the deck gun when waves are washing clear over the bridge. Much more realistic. :O:

Hello guys!
Wow, thanks for the warm welcome, surely havent expected that! Thanks for the information, too!
Since I have little to no experience with Silent Hunter III and mods I came here to seek answers to my silly questions :) I honestly havent expected that much activity! What I got out of your kind suggestions is the following: I will certainly get
- SH3 Commander (I have no idea what it really does but I will find out in a few minutes :p)
- GWX 3.0 Gold (Since its simply stunning and pure awesomeness in one go!)
- The amazing extended interior mod v 1.0 (I was blown away when I saw this)
I have no idea what else to get. I was specifically looking for the alternate GUI (Is that how you call it?) Frontier is using in his videos. Since I am planning to play on the highest possible realism settings (God help us all lol) I want to be starting out as complete as I can. However, no luck so far... My search will continue! As soon as I have all these mods I will probably start.
Another question came to my mind! Right, so I am a total newbie and I am no experencied player by all means. I still havent figured out how to manually hit a target with a torpedo but I will work on that with the help of a few guides here. My question is, are some of you still having multiplayer games in SH3? If thats the case, I would be more than happy to meet up with you as soon as I am actually able to play lol. Wouldnt be too much fun if I am not even able to hit the Titanic with a torpedo, right? :)
Once again, thanks for the great welcome in your forums!
Regards,
Avenger

If you have a good spec PC I'd recommend the Merchant Fleet Mod - lots more juicy targets :yeah:
Other mods, Lifeboat and Debris, modified searchlights, no continuous ship spotted. :yep:
Oh, and skins, lots of skins, Fubar's in particular

As for multiplayer, I don't think there is a huge online community, you could try PMing PaulH513 and see if he still goes online.

Oh great! I was looking for these 2 (Lifeboat and Debris, modified searchlights) but couldnt remember the exact names... Hah! Excellent, my folder should be almost complete! Now just to find that modified UI or GUI or whatever you call it :p
Edit: Thanks for linking me to that thread Herr-Berbunch. Amazing what the modders have done! Simply stunning. I cant wait to get started! And I also found the modified GUI thanks to your link, yay :D

Thanks Sailor Steve but... That is exactly the same link of Herr-Berbunch :D He posted it right above haha. Thanks anyway, that is probably the best help to find all the stuff I need.
Well, I was hoping for my first run today but some problems occured. First of all it was a PAIN in the arse to fix my widescreen problem. Yeah I had a huge problem. It was all stretchy and pretty much unplayble, no idea why or how this happened. When I got around that problem the next one occured right away. I tried to start the first training and - CTD without an error message. Lol :)
No mods installed so far, just wanted to start up the game for a test run... I might just try to install some mods. maybe they magically fix the problem but I doubt it... Gonna do some research to find out what the heck is happening!

I had just come home from a game at the local hobby shop, and it was a little after midnight.

Yeah, GWX is awesome.
I also use lifeboats and debris. That is very cool.
The FM interior mod (is that what we are talking about) is very cool, but I find it can tax the resources of your machine, so if you start having CTD, disable it. Plus if you switch to a type IX it is no longer applicable.
Manual targeting is easy if you do 90 degree attacks. That is, you approach your target 90 degrees to its heading.
Here is how you do it:
1) Determine target speed. There are formulas, or you can use your stopwatch to determine the number of meters it travels in 3:15 using the stopwatch. This also gives the speed. This is the most important piece of information.
2) Drive your u-boat 90 degrees to the target's heading. The closer you get, the better your odds of a hit and the less chance of a premature detonation (those almost never happen under 1000m). I try and shoot from 1000m or less. 500m if I can manage it.
3) Set your scope (uzo or periscope) to 000 bearing. Turn on your TDC to manual mode.
4) Set the Angle on the Bow to either 90 degrees port or starboard, depending on which side of the ship you are. If you are on the starboard side of the target, turn the dial to 90 degrees to the right. If you are on the port side of the target, turn the dial 90 degrees to the left.
5) Set the target's speed.
6) Turn off the TDC manual mode.
7) Turn your scope until the Gyroangle reads "000". You should be turning towards the target. This allows you to "lead" the target as obviously you must fire some few degrees away from straight ahead in order to hit the target when it is actually straight ahead.
8) When the target crosses your vertical reticule, fire your torpedo. If you desire to strike multiple places on the target specifically, shoot as those places cross the reticule.
Distance to target is irrelevant with this method, so long as you are within range of your torpedoes, of course.
The close you are to your target the less susceptible you will be to errors in measurements or evasive maneuvers by your target.
If you want to start shooting from angles other than 90 degrees to track you will have to learn about how to estimate the target's angle on the bow. Sometimes you will want to do this if you are trying to slide a magnetic torp under a target that is not at 90 degrees to you.
But your optimal setup is a 90-degree attack. You have the best likelihood of impact detonation at that angle.

Hi Avenger I'm not 100% on this but I think the GUI that Frontier uses in his video is Hitmans. I can upload it to my gamefront account if you'd like and if that's ok with Hitman.
Best regards.

Thanks for your kind assistance, more than appreciated!
So yeah, the only thing I am missing right now is the GUI. I wasnt really able to find out what it exactly was, Fontiers GUI looks like the thing to go with when learning the game. The only problem I have atm is holding me back... :)
I really want to start but it would be wiser to wait until that crucial part is available! Frontier has uploaded a list of the mods he is using.
http://forums.voltronarmy.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1821
There are some confusing things about the list. Firstly, I cant make out any GUI mod in there... Due to my lack of experience I guess :)
Secondly, why are some mods greyed out and others in bold black? Does that mean the greyed out ones are deactivated and on a "standby" mode?
Regards and a happy weekend guys,

Hi mate.
The only ref I can see in that list to a GUI is
OLC 'Gold' MKII~Option 4~Enviroment with EDE and GUI with LRT
The reason some mods are greyed out is because they have been over written in part by other mods, hence the mod that follows the one I quoted has changed/upgraded the previous mod.
Hope this helps.
Best regards.

Oh! :)
Well, that explains it. I thought the greyed out stuff was completely deactivated and not just partly updated! In that case the GUI is easily noticable, yeah... I am so meh. LOL. Could have made that conclusion on my own I guess :D
You probably saved me alot of time there mate, I think if I start grabbing that stuff now I might be able to actually start tonight! Cant wait :)
EDIT: I just noticed that I recieved a "promotion" :) It even fits my current state of confusion hahhahaha. At least the avatar changed, too. The previous one was a bit like Bernard if you know what I mean :)

Just to let you know, I am still playing this :D It is one of the things you will come back to everytime hehe. I still havent finished any career in any Silent Hunter but hey, here we go again :p
Silent Hunter 5 is a bit disappointing after all. Still trying to find some mods to make the nice looking game "playable".
I hope you are all well and doing good! :)
