View Full Version : Remembering frustrations the hard way

It had been a while since I have played SH3. Being preoccupied with 4 and forever tweeking 5 has kept me busy. I came back to SHIII earlier this afternoon and I was re-introduced to something I had mercifully forgotten; dud torpedoes. I had mercifully forgotten how utterly merciless SHIII was with duds. On my 17th career patrol, I had a dud rate of 70%. I only sank three ships and engaged five. Two got away because of classic SHIII weather (read: raging storm) and torpedo load times. My last kill I had to make a controlled ram to capsize the ship. I went into full "Captain Ahab" mode in order to sink the last ship since I had no torpedoes and the weather is never good enough for the deck gun. So much work for three measly Small Merchants. I almost appreciated 5 for its generous torpedo success rate. Then I remembered (after the fact, when I had calmed down) that the dud rate is very realistic.

Stupid Torpedoes:damn:

That was their life from the books I have read.

It is possible to use guns in any weather either by means of the All Weather Guns mod or by just editing the appropriate line in each submarine type's .cfg file. For example:

To use the deck and/or AA guns in any weather, open the sub type .cfg file, locate the line for Storm Conditions. Change Storm Conditions=7,0.1; to =30,30.1 to allow use in any weather conditions.

c:/ProgramFiles/Ubisoft/SilentHunterIII/Data/Submarine/NSS_Uboat7b.cfg

default:
StormConditions=7,0.1;max wind speed [m/s], max rain intensity [0,1]

changed to:
StormConditions=30,30.1;max wind speed [m/s], max rain intensity [0,1]

You can turn off dud torpedoes when you set the Realism for each career.

I am familiar with the mod, but it is not realistic. The weather I was in was rough enough to where my gun crew would have only had the energy and focus to hang onto lifelines, let alone adjust the windage and elevation of the deck gun, load it and fire. That is why I do not use it.
